2008 Tiger To-Do List for Freshmen
| Step 11: Complete Online AlcoholEDU Prevention Program Deadline: August 25 |
Dear New Student:
Welcome to Towson University! At Towson, we recognize that college is more than just academics; the people you live with, social interactions, and co-curricular activities also play a large role in shaping your experience. We look forward to helping you make meaningful connections as a member of the Towson community. Our goals include ensuring that students have a positive experience at Towson University and that you are aware of your rights and responsibilities as a member of our campus community. One way we do this is by educating all incoming students about alcohol, how it affects your mind and body, and how it can impact your college career and academic success.
To this end, we expect every first-year student to take AlcoholEdu for College, an online alcohol prevention program, before arriving on campus. You may begin taking AlcoholEdu for College on Tuesday, July 29. All you need to take the course is a computer with access to the Internet and audio capabilities. The course has two sections, both of which must be completed to fulfill this requirement:
Part 1 of the course takes approximately 3 hours to complete, and we recommend that you take it in multiple sittings. This part ends after the Exam and Survey 2. You must earn a grade of 70% or higher to pass and receive credit for the course. The deadline for finishing Part 1 is Monday, August 25, 2008.
After you complete Part 1, you will receive an e-mail about 45 days later with instructions on completing Part 2. The deadline to complete Part 2 is Friday, October 17.
The course includes three surveys that measure students' alcohol-related attitudes and behaviors. All survey responses are strictly confidential. Towson University will only receive information about the student body as a whole and will never see individual students' answers. You can feel confident that providing truthful answers-no matter what they are-will not put you at risk for repercussions.
To take AlcoholEdu for College, you will need a computer with Internet access and audio capabilities. If you don't have one at home, most libraries have computers with internet access. To begin AlcoholEdu for College:
- Go to the AlcoholEdu Web site
- Under New User, enter the following Login ID: 8C164076FIRSTYEAR
- Click "Sign Up"
- On the registration page, you will have the opportunity to create your AlcoholEdu for College account using your email address and a password of your choice.
- At this time, you will also need to enter your seven-digit Student ID, which is located above. If you do not enter your official Student ID, you will not receive credit for taking this course.
- You may log in and out of the course at the end of each section. Section ends are marked with a "Next" button. DO NOT log out until you click the "Next" button or you will have to repeat the section you have just gone through.
- When you return, log in as a Returning User and enter the same email address and password you created when you first logged into the course.
Should you experience any difficulties or require support, the AlcoholEdu Online Technical Support Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Simply click on the "Technical Help" button located in the upper right-hand corner of every AlcoholEdu for College screen. You do not need to be logged into the course to access the Technical Support Center.
We have also invited your parents to complete the course using a special parents' login ID. We encourage you to talk to your parents or guardians about AlcoholEdu for College and how you will approach situations involving alcohol while at Towson University. If you have any questions or concerns about AlcoholEdu at any time, please call Dr. Jim Spivack, Special Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs at 410-704-2512.
Again, congratulations on your acceptance to Towson University. I look forward to seeing you on campus this fall.
Sincerely,
Debra Moriarty, Ph.D.
