TOWSON, Md. (Jan. 26, 2012)—Towson University's College of Health Professions has established the Institute for Well-Being, a multi-faceted campus collaboration dedicated to promoting and strengthening health and wellness in the community while simultaneously providing an extraordinary education to TU students.

Opening later this year in a building currently under renovation in downtown Towson, the Institute for Well-Being will unite the programs of four university organizations to serve a wider segment of the community and provide greater hands-on learning opportunities for students in the health professions.

The Institute for Well-Being comprises four organizations:

  • Center for Adults with Autism
  • Occupational Therapy Center
  • Speech, Language and Hearing Center
  • Wellness Center

Housed in a new, 46,878-square-foot space at One Olympic Place (formerly One Investment Place), the Institute for Well-Being will feature an ADA-accessible apartment to help teach life skills to adults with autism or those with cognitive or physical challenges. Other highlights include a specialized playground for children with speech, language or sensory motor needs, an advanced robotic therapy system, and a cutting-edge computer lab.

New and expanded outreach programs include the Comprehensive Cancer Wellness Program designed to improve functional capacity to the person’s pre-diagnosis level, and the Stroke Survivor’s Support and Education Group.

"The institute will offer clinical, health promotion and interprofessional instruction to our students,” explains Charlotte Exner, dean of the College of the Health Professions.

“By establishing the Institute for Well-Being under one roof in Towson, we will strengthen partnerships between Towson University and the surrounding communities while also enhancing student education and experience."
