It was almost sixteen years ago when, serving as Provost and Executive
Vice President, I decided to launch the Towson University Leadership
Institute. The goals behind the Institute are based on national
leadership efforts, including those led by Chambers of Commerce,
the American Leadership Forum, the American Council on Education
and other national organizations. The primary goal of such efforts
is to provide the participants with a range of experiences in the
broader community of which they are a part. In the case of the
Towson University Leadership Institute, our goal is to work with
faculty and staff to broaden their understanding of issues facing
not only Towson University but higher education in general, the
University System of Maryland and the State of Maryland. By expanding
the knowledge base of our university community, by involving the
community in a broader dialogue about the issues we face in common,
and by working with that broader community to plan the future,
we build a strong institution. Such an approach is advantageous
in general and is critical to any healthy and creative institution.
The Institute has been more successful than we dreamed. Hundreds
of faculty and staff have benefited through participation in its
programs and Towson University is a better place because of these
efforts.
We will continue to develop better and better ways to involve all
of the Towson University community and family in the operation
and evolvement of our campus. The Leadership Institute is a major
cornerstone in that effort. I welcome any comments you would
care to provide in how we can strengthen these efforts together.
