Spring Break Trips

Lancaster, PA

The International Student and Scholar Office often organizes a daytrip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania during the spring break week. The first half of the day provides students with a chance to learn about the history and culture of the Amish people, as they take a tour of a home in the Amish farmlands. They observe children wearing old-style dress playing games that mainstream American culture have lost through the generations. By the end of the tour they are able to identify specific aspects of home and dress that are represented in Amish culture. International students are usually moved and impressed by the Amish and their way of life.
After the tour, the bus takes us to a local restaurant where students can eat a home-cooked country meal.

The second half of the day is spent browsing and shopping at the Lancaster outlet malls. Most students come away with some excellent bargains, and return home completely satisfied. An international student who attended this trip reflects, “I think the (spring break) trips help international students to feel more integrated to the university and to the group of international students.”

If you are interested in attending this trip, or would like the ISSO to plan a similar trip elsewhere, please contact Scott Pierson at spierson@towson.edu with your comments and/or suggestions.
