SOCIAL SCIENCE GRADUATE PROGRAM

Message From Dr. Nicole DombrowskiRisser, Program Director

Dear Prospective Applicant,

Welcome to our homepage!  Thank you for your interest in Towson University’s new and exciting graduate program, the Master of Science Program in Social Science (MSSOSC). We invite applications for the Fall 2008 semester from anyone holding a B.A. or B.S. degree from a four-year college.  Applications are accepted on a rolling admissions basis, so there's still time to apply to become a member of the Fall 2008 class.  Applications can be obtained by contacting the Graduate School Office, 410-704-2501, 1-888-4TOWSON.

We are also pleased to announce out new program of study, the Global Analysis Track.

The MSSOSC promises a graduate experience to help students stimulate intellectual growth and advance professional goals. Prospective students with undergraduate backgrounds in the various social sciences or professional backgrounds in teaching secondary school, government service, non-profit administration or cultural service will find our course offerings of particular interest.

The degree program breaks down into two areas of concentration. First students follow an interdisciplinary core program of study (6 courses, 18 credits) designed to instruct them in new ideas, methods and research topics in the contributing fields of geography, history, political science, economics, sociology, psychology and anthropology. Within the core, every student takes a course called “Global Problems,” a course designed to identify a specific problem experienced globally and studied from the different perspectives by all the social science disciplines. An example of a topic for the “Global Problems,” course might be urbanization, conservation or communications.

After completing the core, students may track in one of the disciplinary fields. Students will work under the supervision of an advisor chosen from their track discipline, complete 18 credits of study within that field and choose among two options for fulfilling the degree, a thesis or a professional presentation.

The faculty of the College of Liberal Arts at Towson University believes the MSSOSC offers an exciting opportunity to deepen students'  intellectual interests in the academic disciplines comprising the social sciences and advance candidates' career goals, contributing to an experience of  life-long learning.  We believe the strength of our program rests in allowing students wide room to pursue their own academic interests and providing close working partnerships with dedicated faculty and advisors.

Thank you for your interest in Towson University and the Master of Science Program in Social Science. We look forward to meeting you.
