| Western society has experienced a number of “knowledge revolutions”—pivotal moments when human knowledge was radically transformed through culture, religion, art, science, politics, and new discoveries. In this course, we will study a few chosen knowledge revolutions, such as the invention of the printing press, the Scientific Revolution, and the discovery of the New World, through both primary and secondary texts. Furthermore, to enhance our own cultural literacy, we will discuss the portrayal of these events in modern film and literature in order to examine how our modern perceptions of these knowledge revolutions have been shaped by our own twenty-first century values. This is a 10 week course offered to Honors College students only. |
