Students who enroll in an internship get an opportunity to use their historical knowledge and skills in practical workplace settings. Students gain important work experience while still working toward their degree at Towson. Interested students should make an appointment with the history department internship advisor, Dr. Christian Koot (

Students must complete 27 units in history in order to be eligible for an internship, and all internship applications must be approved by the history department chairperson. Once their application has been approved, students register for HIST 493: Internship. Students can earn no more than 6 course units with any one agency. Internships are graded S/U, and cannot be taken for graduate credit.

Towson students have completed internships at a variety of institutions including:

  • Baltimore Industrial Museum
  • Maryland State Archives
  • Frederick Civil War Museum
  • Indian Steps Museum--Pennsylvania
  • Jewish Historical Society
  • Towson University Archives
  • Towson Historical Journal
  • Several private companies looking for help developing exhibits and archives

This list is only representative of what Towson students have done in the past; each student may find and pursue an internship with any organization as long as their duties are historical in nature. If you have specific interests please contact Dr. Koot to discuss them.

Internships in Historical Archeology:

Due in April 2013

University of Virginia Summer Field School offers internships in historical archeology at Jamestown, Poplar Forest, and Monticello.

Internships at the Maryland State Archives: Due April 1, 2013

The Maryland State Archives is currently accepting applications for summer internships in Archival Management, Electronic Archives, Historical Research, and in the Legacy of Slavery Research Division. Contact or visit the MD State Archives Internship page.

Governor’s Summer Internship Program, Due: March 11, 2013

The Governor’s Summer Internship Program introduces college students to the unique challenges and rewards of working within MD State Government while earning a $3,000 stipend. For 10 weeks (June 3 – August 9).

Walter Sondheim Jr. Nonprofit Leadership Internship Program, Due March 15, 2013

The Maryland Nonprofit Leadership Program offers paid summer internship opportunities in the nonprofit sector to college juniors, seniors, and graduate students attending Maryland institutions. Participating interns work for 10 weeks full-time from June4th to August 10h while participating in bi-weekly seminars in nonprofit management. Each participating student receives a $3,000 stipend.

Maryland Department of Transportation Fellows Internship Program, Due March 8th

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Fellows Internship Program is designed to introduce Maryland’s most promising college students to the rewards and challenges of working within Maryland’s integrated transportation system. Interns can gain experience in policy development, marketing, international relations, computer networking, engineering, planning and financing, public relations, and neighborhood conservation. Participating student earn $3,500 during 8 weeks this summer (June 10 to August 2nd).

G. Krug & Son Ironworks Museum

Research Internship – This internship position will include the tasks of researching information about the parent company, G Krug & Son, the history of iron and Baltimore, and iron forging techniques, equipment, and products in order to help compile a general tutorial that can be used to educate future museum tour guides, and visitors.
