Past Experience and Personal Interests
While she started her academic career with the intent to become a high school science teacher, Dr. Werts decided to take her love for all things health related a step further. When studying for her first MS degree she also discovered she had a knack for things computer geeky and decided to combine health and informatics for her doctoral degree. Dr. Werts found a passion (and a way to make extra money) by practicing Shiatsu Acupressure and Bodywork. She continues to hold a Maryland state license in massage therapy (CMT) and a national certification in Chinese Medicine and Asian Bodywork Therapy (NCAAOM Dipl. ABT). Dr. Werts has taught a variety of classes on the college and adult education levels from Introduction to Systems Analysis to Exercise Prescription and almost everything in between. She most enjoys lecturing about Nutrition. Food and its impacts on health from both the western medical perspective and eastern traditional holistic perspectives are an area of interest for her both professionally and personally. She has worked on academic and research related projects about nutrition related diseases (obesity, diabetes and hypertension) with the National Institutes of Health, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and the University of Maryland at Baltimore School of Family Medicine. In short she loves food and believes it can heal as well as harm.
Dr. Werts came to Towson in 2007 as a visiting professor after many years of adjunct teaching and owning her own health education business. She was hired as a new assistant professor in 2008 and will begin her tenure track appointment in Fall 2008. She enjoys martial arts and foreign films. If she’s not power lifting or practicing her broadsword, she is most likely armchair sewing and avoiding one of her crazy dates’ text messages
