Sense(s) of Place in Contrasting Regions: Early Spring in Xi'an and Hangzhou

Dr. James SmithAs scholars and writers who describe the surface of the earth, geographers possess an acute consciousness of places and landscapes in which they live and to which they travel. A curiosity-driven passion for place(d) experiences is typical of most geographers, and exploring land and life in the field is one of the most hallowed and rewarding geographical traditions.

For me, this passion was reignited on a recent journey to China. One of the great pleasures of being a geographer-whether as a casual traveler or fieldworker- is the opportunity to embrace the joy of discovering-in a positive, respectful way-places that stimulate the senses and engage the intellect. The human species has an ingenious capacity to reshape land into livable spaces. A deeper understanding of our interrelationship with landscape and place enlightens us about the meaning of our existence, and the dynamics of identity.
