Workshops and Conferences
Providing a rigorous education grounded in the liberal arts and opportunities for community involvement through service learning and civic engagement are cornerstones of the mission of the Department of Family Studies and Community Development. In support of this mission, the department either sponsors or co-sponsors three annual community outreach workshops: a Disability Awareness Workshop, a Supervisor Training Workshop, and, in conjunction with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, a workshop on relevant issues for families living with childhood cancer.
Disability Awareness Workshop
This workshop is held each October and is designed to raise student awareness and understan ding of individuals with disabilities. In addition, participants are informed about available resources and potential careers. The 2011 Workshop, titled Conversations about Mental Health: Reducing Stigma, was held on Wednesday, October 26. Almost 200 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and community professionals attended. The featured speaker was Alison Malmon, Founder and Executive Director of Active Minds. This nonprofit organization develops and supports student-run chapters at colleges and universities in order to educate students and raise awareness of mental-health issues.
Supervisor Training Workshop
This annual event is designed for human service professionals currently in supervisory positions as well as those seeking to develop or refine leadership and supervision skills. It is applicable for many disciplines.
The 2011 workshop, titled Critical Issues and Ethics in Supervision, was held on June 17, 2011. Virginia Smith Harvey Ph.D., professor and director of the School Psychology Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston, was the speaker.
