Final Approval for Internships
Final approval for all internships is granted by the department chair. This approval is based on, but not limited to, review of pre-internship documentation, the student’s knowledge of and ability to apply ethical guidelines as evidenced in FMST 297 coursework, the student’s academic record and advising file, and student performance in prior service learning classes.
Student meetings for final approval for the spring semester are held in December. Student meetings for final approval for summer and fall internships are held in May. At this time, the student will present their plan for internship classes by submitting the completed Internship Plan Form. Once the student has committed to their plan for internships, any changes to the plan will require the student to submit a petition.
If a student is issued a permit for FMST 397 and subsequently does not meet the prerequisites as stated above, that student will be removed from the course.
In preparation for internship, students are encouraged to assess time and financial demands including work schedules, use of financial aid, family commitments and extracurricular activities.
Students who are applying for FMST 497 Advanced Internship in Family Studies must follow the process outlined for the Advanced Internship Requirements and Approval Process.
