Internship Handbook: Family Studies
Program
Pre-Registration Checklist
Prior to the registration of FMST 397,
students seeking internships are required to complete a series of steps
to assist in the transition towards their internship placement.
Step 1: Consider the Internship Carefully
-
Think about an area of professional concentration.
-
Consider places you would like to intern and populations with whom you would like to work.
-
Prepare a professional resume (work on this with the TU Career Center).
-
Sign up for one of the FMST Internship
Workshops in the FMST Office (Room 310, LLT).
Step 2: FMST Internship Workshop
- Bring a copy of your resume to the workshop (this can be a draft).
- Sign the attendance sheet at the workshop.
Obtain and complete Worksheets 1 & 2 at the workshop.
- Register for an e-Recruiting account at www.towson.edu/careercenter.
Step 3: Prepare for Placement
- Identify 3-4 specific internship placements in which to meet listed objectives (Worksheet 1).
- Rank placements in terms of preference.
- Email this list of ranked placements, along with your three proposed objectives to one of the FMST Internship Instructors.
- Ms. Gina Costa: gcosta@towson.edu
- Dr. Jodi Jacobson: jjacobson@towson.edu
- After approving your placements and objectives, your instructor will email you preliminary approval required for a course permit. Dr. Karen Eskow will then provide official course permits and final approval for your internship placement will come from your instructor.
Step 4 : Register
- After receiving preliminary approval for a permit from Ms. Costa or Dr. Jacobson, you can arrange to obtain your permit to register for the semester.
- To get a permit:
- Sign-up to attend permit meeting in LLT Room 310-A OR
- If you are unable to attend this meeting, make an appointment with the Academic Advisor (Dr. Eskow) (410) 704-5851.
- When you meet with the Academic Advisor, be sure to have copies of your completed Worksheets 1 & 2 and email approval from your instructor (keep a copy of all paperwork for your records.
Step 5: Select Internship Site
- As soon as you have received your permit, begin making contact with
potential internship sites that have been approved by your instructor.
- When you call potential internship sites be sure to:
- Ask for the person who coordinates internships.
- Introduce yourself (name, school affiliation, year in school).
- Tell the supervisor what is required (i.e. an internship which will allow you to work at least 120 hours in the field with and/or on behalf of families during a semester).
- Discuss the types of experiences you are seeking.
- Be prepared to talk about the Family Studies Program and what your area of study has focused on thus far.
- Send a summary of all initial contacts and communications to your instructor via email, before the semester begins.
It is important to note that many
internship sites require students to plan in advance, sometimes up to 6
months in advance for their internship.
Once you know where you will be interning, complete the following
information and bring to your professor on the first day of class.
