2011 FCSM EXCELLENCE IN SCHOLARSHIP
Our recipient of the Excellence in Scholarship Award has established a very strong research record since arriving at Towson University not too long ago. This award was based on a record which includes the publication of 8 papers in prestigious peer-reviewed journals and being an internationally-recognized authority in her field. She has given numerous invited talks at national and international meetings and been asked to co-organize three minisymposiums at major international conferences, co-hosted two international workshops at Towson University and serves as a frequent referee for highly ranked journals in her area of expertise. Additionally her research has been supported by a foundation award.
Quoting from a nomination letter, the awardee has "demonstrated strong research abilities and has made noticeable contribution to the Department's research activities."
Our recipient's scholarly excellence also enriches the learning experiences of our students, as she is both an excellent classroom teacher and an outstanding mentor to several undergraduate and graduate students.
The recipient received a B.S. in Mathematics from Kazakh State University, an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and then a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University. She then spent 2 years in a prestigious postdoctoral position at the University of Georgia before starting at Towson in 2007.
It is a great pleasure to introduce our 2011 recipient of the Excellence in Scholarship Award for her scholarly work on spline approximation, Dr. Tatyana Sorokina from the Department of Mathematics.
