Robert Noyce Scholarship Program

Events

  • Hackerman Academy Hands-on-Science Event - March 9, 2012

The "Importance of Recycling" was demonstrated by Catherine Lorenzo and Taharah Shaw. Second grade students from Waverly Elementary School in Baltimore City learned how to dispose of Styrofoam. Extraction of polystyrene, a form of Styrofoam, from the acetone solution allows the manufacture of new Styrofoam and prevents used Styrofoam from entering landfills.

The "Liquid Nitrogen Activity" was facilitated by Adriana Brungardt, Brian Eney, and Sherry Leslie. Using liquid nitrogen, the Noyce scholars showed the children the properties of freezing gasses and liquids. They demonstrated what happens when bananas, balloons, and flowers are dipped into a container of liquid nitrogen.
