John Mackerron

Associate Professor of Electronic Media and Film since 1994, he received his B.S. Degree in Physics with certification to teach high school science from the S.U.N.Y College at Fredonia. While at Fredonia State, he revitalized the campus radio station, served as its General Manager and worked part time at the local commercial station, WDOE. He left teaching to pursue a Master’s Degree in Television and Radio at Syracuse University which was awarded in 1969. During his Master’s work, he served as a Resident Advisor in the university’s dorms and worked part time at the local rock station, WOLF. After earning his Master’s, he worked as a full time news reporter/anchor for WOLF radio while at the same time working toward his doctorate in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation which was awarded from Syracuse in 1983. In 1971 he accepted a full time position at Towson State College, now Towson University. During his tenure at the university, he contributed to the development of the Mass Communication major broadcasting area which included putting FM radio station WCVF (now WTMD) on the air as an extracurricular activity for Mass Communication majors. He left WCVF to engage in the process of putting a university television station on the air, and, through his efforts, WMJF-TV, an F.C.C. licensed lower power television station (LPTV) went on the air in 1989. Dr. MacKerron supervises this student managed and operated extracurricular activity which broadcasts to the local community on UHF Channel 16. Dr. MacKerron has served as chapter advisor to the National Broadcasting Society (NBS), and as a national officer of the organization. He is an active member of the Broadcast Education Association (BEA), and frequently presents papers and appears on panels at the association’s national conventions. He currently teaches EMF 140, Introduction to Electronic Media and Film as well as television production courses.
