Department of Economics
Undergraduate Programs
The department offers four programs for the
study of economics: the major, the minor, the
combined major, and the major in business
administration with a track in economics.
The economics major offers the undergraduate major in economics to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, not a business degree. Students that
want to make economics the focus of their
education typically choose to major in economics. Many employers and graduate
schools understand its value and rank it above
other degrees. The major requires 33 units in
economics, completed with a grade equivalent of
2.00 or better.
The economics minor may be taken with any other
major.
It requires 18 units in economics.
In combined majors, the Department of
Economics cooperates with three other departments,
Mathematics, Geography and Environmental
Planning, and Political Science, to permit
the student with strong intellectual curiosity and
commitment to obtain a major in two fields of
study. The Department of Economics requires a
student seeking a combined major to complete
the Principles and upper-level Microeconomics
and Macroeconomics sequences. A program of
study that satisfies two departments' requirements
simultaneously must be planned carefully.
Both departments will offer some leeway to the
combined major student, accepting for credit a
few courses from the student's other major that
would not count toward a single major's requirements.
We strongly encourage a close reading of
the Undergraduate Catalog or Web site and
consultation with advisers in both departments.
For students that are primarily interested in business administration,
but appreciate the value of the study of
economics, majoring
in business administration and specifying a track
in economics may be the program of choice.
