Careers in Economics

The pure scholar may say that the deeply satisfying sense of understanding that economics conveys is enough, but most of us also have to make a living. Many employers recognize the advantages of hiring people trained in the economic way of thinking.

Job opportunities for economists are increasing in private industry and in research and consulting firms. In business, economists use their abilities to analyze and present both verbal and statistical information on the marketing and pricing of products, adding new lines of merchandise, opening new branches or plants, forecasting market conditions, and estimating the impact of government regulations.

Government agencies recognize and value the same abilities, and seek economists to analyze economic conditions and estimate the effects of proposed changes in public policy. The wide range of fields in which government economists work includes agriculture, business, environment, finance, labor, transportation, utilities and international trade. The U.S. Department of Commerce, the Federal Trade Commission, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are three of the many federal agencies that hire economists. A bachelor’s degree with a major in economics is sufficient for many beginning management, marketing and research positions in the private sector. The federal government requires applicants to have 21 credits of economics, calculus, some accounting, and at least 3 credits of statistics. Some recent graduates who were Towson economics majors are employed as:

Financial Adviser, Legg Mason Wood Walker, Inc.
Loan Officer, Point Breeze Credit Union
Economist, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
Inventory Production Analyst, Sherwin-Williams Company
Research Assistant, Congressional Budget Office
Student Judge Advocate, U.S. Marine Corps
Research Assistant, Heritage Foundation
Senior Software Quality Engineer, AAI Corp.

The study of economics is excellent preparation for graduate work in many fields, including business, law, and, of course, economics. Towson University’s economics majors have pursued graduate degrees at Cornell University, University of Chicago, The Johns Hopkins University, Purdue University, University of Virginia, University of Rochester, and other nationally ranked schools.
