Dowell Health Center

Campus PhotoEmergencies and After Hours Urgent Care

Medical Emergencies: If you have a true medical emergency or it is after 10 pm, your only option for medical care is a hospital Emergency Room.
If on campus, dial 9-911 or use a blue or yellow emergency phone. If off campus, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. Both St. Joseph Medical Center and Greater Baltimore Medical Center are located within a few minutes of campus.
Greater Baltimore Medical Center: 443-849-200.  Located on Charles Street, just south of Towsontown Blvd. www.GBMC.org
St. Joseph Medical Center: 410-337-1000. www.sjmcmd.org
Take Towsontown Blvd. and turn south onto Osler Drive to St. Joseph Medical Center. Take the Emergency entrance into the hospital campus.

Urgent Problems:
Most urgent problems and common acute illnesses do not warrant a costly visit to the ER and will be handled much more quickly at the Dowell Health Center or an urgent care center. You are likely to experience very long waits at the ER, where serious problems and life-threatening emergencies are the priority (6-8 hours is not unusual). In addition,  your insurance may not cover all or part of the costs of an unnecessary ER visit (which can be substantial).  If your problem can wait until we reopen,  come to see us. Always call ahead if possible so we can pull your medical record.  (410-704-2466).

If the Health Center is closed, you may consider the urgent care facility listed below which provides free shuttle service between the TU campus and their facility.

Express Care Urgent Care Center: 410-628-1861  www.whywaitintheer.com
9832F York Road (in Texas Center) Cockeysville.
Hours: Mon-Fri  Open until 9PM; Sat. 10AM -8PM; Sun. 10 AM- 6PM.
Starting September, 2008: Free shuttle service from TU campus to Express Care and back for TU students needing urgent care when Dowell Health Center is closed.
Call 410-628-1861 for shuttle schedule and pickup locations on campus.

There are several other urgent care or "minute clinics" in the Towson area. Check with your insurance plan or consult the yellow pages for locations/hours.

Paying for Emergency or After-Hours Urgent Care Visits:
The Dowell Health Center does not cover visits to the emergency department or an outside urgent care center. Check with your insurance or the facility to verify if it is a participating provider. If you are not sure whether you should go to the emergency room or urgent care and it is during Health Center office hours (8AM-5PM), call a Dowell Health Center nurse at 410-704-2941.
