
Bio
Yvonne Hardy-Phillips is a native of Baltimore, MD. and a TU alumna. She completed her BA degree (cum laude) in art studio in the winter of 1980. Since 1998 she has been the director of the African American Cultural Center (AACC) under the auspices of the Center for Student Diversity in the Division of Student Affairs. Prior to coming TU, Yvonne enjoyed a successful career as a professional curator. She has held curatorial positions at the Banneker Douglass Museum in Annapolis, MD. and the Eubie Blake National Museum in Baltimore among other arts related positions.
Additionally, Yvonne directs the day-to-day activities of the AACC, which has been in existence at TU for over 30 years. The center serves as an “oasis of cultural wealth” by providing programming and resources that allow students, faculty, staff, and visitors the opportunity to delve into the rich history, folkways, contributions and issues surrounding African Diaspora and African American life. She is a strong advocate for students and serves as official/unofficial advisor to the Sisterhood, Brotherhood, Kuumba Players, and the Black Student Union.
Yvonne is a member of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs (NCLP) and the Association of Black Cultural Centers, where she has served as State Coordinator for Maryland. She enjoys reading, traveling, cooking, and the arts.
Furthermore, Yvonne has received several commendations for her work on behalf of Towson students and the university including “Outstanding Program” – Student Affairs Leadership Awards Program (2001, 2002) and a Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Service from the TU Alumni Association (2004). She is a very proud member of the 2002 President’s Leadership Institute.
