Santiago Solis joined Towson University in August 2007. Prior to joining the TU community, he was a school teacher in the field of special education. Santiago taught in inclusive, general, and special education classrooms in Manhattan, the Bronx, Houston, San Diego, and Baltimore. In addition to his experiences in the classroom, Dr. Solis has supervised student teachers in middle school settings; co-facilitated peer education and support groups; developed and coordinated student mentorship programs; facilitated workshops on multicultural and diversity themes; organized bi-national HIV/AIDS conferences; developed, field tested, and trained teachers in the implementation of K-12 curricula in both English and Spanish; collaborated with university faculty on various research projects; officiated as a liaison between public school districts and local community based organizations; and served in various boards and committees focusing on equity and social justice issues.  

 

Dr. Solis completed his B.A. in History at UC Berkeley, his M.A. in History at Brown University, and his Ed.D. in Learning Disabilities at Columbia University. He has published numerous articles in various academic journals and edited volumes including: Contemporary Youth Culture: An International Encyclopedia; Disability Studies Quarterly; Encyclopedia of American Disability History; Equity & Excellence in Education; HYPATIA: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy; Journal of Learning Disabilities; and Vital Questions Facing Disability Studies in Education. He is an active member of several professional organizations including: American Association of People with Disabilities; American Educational Research Association; Learning Disabilities Association of America; Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association; Society for Disability Studies; The Council for Exceptional Children; and the Society for Disability Studies. In addition, Santiago is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA).

 

As senior director, Santiago spearheads the Asian Pacific Islander and Hispanic/Latino student programs. He supervises the directors of the African American Cultural Center, LGBT Student Development, and Student Success Programs (SAGE & CEEP). Further, Santiago assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure that all students succeed at Towson.
