University Child Care

Meals

Due to the health problems associated with peanut butter, we are not serving peanut butter until further notice. Popcorn presents choking hazards for young children (and the elderly), and so will not be served permanently. Grapes, grape tomatoes, hot dog, celery, carrots, cucumber, zuccini, all present hazards for choking because of their shape, and the size of the opening of a young child's throat. Because our families bring lunches for their children, and because young children love to offer/share food with each other, we ask that our parents not send any foods which include peanut butter or popcorn, or are not cut both lengthwise and diameter-wise to ensure that the food is smaller than the child's throat opening. In the event that a child does inadvertently arrive with peanut butter or popcorn, we will take the food away from them and offer a substitution, just to be safe. Please save us the time and the teacher's-aide-away-from-the-lunch-table with the children, by cutting everything length and width wise, ensuring that the food you pack are just extra-tiny slivers of finger-food before you ready and pack your child's lunch.

Thank you for understanding our concerns, and supporting our efforts to ensure everyone's safety and continued good health.

Menus are posted on the cabinet door just to the left as you enter the kitchen from the hallway.

Parents provide lunches for their children. We will not reheat anything, so, if you choose to use a thermos, please ensure that it is 100% plastic, no glass inserts, please.

If your child does not eat or drink certain foods, please BE SURE to advise us. You may supply an alternative with your child's name printed clearly in dark magic marker, and leave it in the far left refrigerator, where lunches are stored. If you would like for your child to be drinking non-additive milk, for instance, you are most welcome to keep us supplied with the milk you prefer, label it so that it is clear who it is for, and keep us supplied with fresh, current, milk.

There are three refrigerator boxes as you enter the kitchen from the hallway, our children's lunches are stored in the last box from the hallway where you enter the kitchen. Conversely, if you come through the multipurpose room to the kitchen, the refrigerator will be the first box on your left. Please also note: each semester there are different days when university classes are being taught in our multipurpose room, so meals on those days are eaten in individual classrooms. The sliding doors between the kitchen and the multipurpose room will also be closed.

Please avoid entering the multipurpose room on those days, so as not to interrupt the class which is being held in that space at that time. Thank you in advance for your consideration of our space-use.

Birthdays: We celebrate birthdays at our afternoon snack time ONLY. Please do not bring whistles, balloons, peanuts (in shells or otherwise) popcorn etc. --all potential choking hazards. (The Lead Teacher will be forced to take things from the birthday table which represent any type of threat, which will probably be quite upsetting to your child. Please do not bring anything which could be dangerous to a young child.)

You are most welcome to bring a camera. Tripods are not welcome as they present a tripping hazard around lively, young children.
