Shodekeh, Department of Dance Accompanist, was awarded the Baker Artist Prize of $25,000


Shodekeh was selected by a jury of national experts to receive the 2011 Mary Sawyers Baker awards along with two other local artists. Each artist will receive $25,000 and be featured in an exhibition at The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) from September 7 – October 2, 2011.

Deep Vision Dance Company Launches Partnership with Towson University Community Dance


On April 29, 2011 a viscerally stimulating evening of work was presented designed to evoke emotion and arouse curiosity. UNCOVER featured new work by Nicole Martinell, Dance Department Adjunct Faculty, and four collaborative works. Guest artists and collaborators included the Towson University Youth Ensemble, Jason Baker and Shodekeh (composers), Ron Santana (videographer), and Rebecca Wolf (sculptor).

Deep Vision Dance Company has been accepted to perform at the Dance Place New Choreographers Release Showcase


A collection of adjudicated works by established and emerging choreographers from throughout the DC, Maryland and Virginia region on July 2nd and July 3rd, 2011. Towson University Company members Jeanna Riscigno and Lara Friedman will be representing the Deep Vision Dance Company in Flirt & Fizzle.

Vincent Thomas and Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell Awarded Individual Artist Awards


On January 28, 2011 the Maryland State Arts Council announced the recipients of their FY 2011 Individual Artist Awards. Vincent Thomas was awarded a $3000 award for Choreography and Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell was awarded $6000 for Solo Dance Performance.

Partnership with Johns Hopkins at Green Spring Station


A special partnership is being developed for our Dance Majors and Faculty Research in Dance Science and Somatics including work by Nancy Romita, Nicole Martinell (BS in Kinesiology and CMA in training, MFA), Sandra Perez (CMA, MA), Jaye Knutson(CMA, MA), Malcolm Shute (CMA, MFA.) Physical Therapy with Johns Hopkins at Green Spring Station has developed a performing arts physical therapy program. In collaboration with a Hopkins physicians, the collaboration offers comprehensive physical therapy evaluations, onsite seminars and workshops, pre-pointe assessments, and pre-season injury screenings. The other therapist and Dr. May have professional dance experience and have trained with CPYB, Boston Ballet, and the Rock School to name a few.

 

Susan Mann, Professor of Dance, Coordinates “Surviving and Thriving Together” Residency


October 2010, The Department of Dance hosted a series of lectures and presentation looking at the economic survival of ballet as a performing art.

Sidney Pink Published in New York Times Magazine


Sidney Pink (Ryan Mahon), Department of Dance Administrative Assistant, was commissioned to create an illustration for an article in The New York Times Magazine. It appeared as an insert in the New York Times paper on Sunday, December 19, 2010.

Rebecca Wolf Hired as Associate Production Manager for Jacob’s Pillow


Rebecca Wolf, Production Coordinator and Lighting Designer for the Department of Dance, was chosen to work as Associate Production Manager for Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts summer 2011. This famous historical presenting house of traditional and contemporary American Dance theatrical art will allow Ms. Wolf to bring back some great stories and new techniques for our students to integrate into their production knowledge and skills.

 

Children’s Dance Division grows into Community Dance


Candice Webster, Education Director of Towson University Community Dance, leads the way as
the 30 Year old Children’s Dance Division is expanding to match the department’s vision for “Dancing for a Lifetime” with adult classes and preparation for college dance major programs.

Towson University Department of Dance Receives President’s Diversity Award


President Robert Caret has awarded the Towson University Department of Dance as the first academic department to receive President’s Diversity Award, presented during the 2011 Multicultural Conference. “Your department’s commitment to advancing diversity has provided a significant contribution to the university’s ability to foster a greater awareness and understanding of diversity as well as a welcoming campus environment that enhances the experiences of all members of the Towson University community," said President Robert Caret.

 

Lara Friedman Won First Place Washington DC Chapter’s National Society of Arts and Letters


Towson University Dance major Lara Friedman competed in the Washington DC Chapter’s National Society of Arts and Letters. Entitled "Choreography: The Art of Solo," this year’s local competition took place at The Maryland Youth Ballet. Every year the National Career Award is given to a different type of art: this year it was dance. As first place winner, she won the $4000 dollar prize and will go on to compete in Nationals against the other chapters for NSAL in Alabama, May 2011.
