Minutes
December 10, 2007
1. The minutes of the November 12 meeting were accepted as amended and will be sent via email to Committee members.
2. Chair Toni Marzotto explained that the Registrar’s Office has volunteered to be the new liaison for the General Education Reporting Committee, chaired by Professor Peter Wray. Ms. Suzanne Hill will serve as the Reporting Committee’s Secretary, convening meetings and recording minutes as needed. Minutes will be posted on the Curriculum Committees web site.
3. Professor Jim diLisio presented a proposal to eliminate the Irish Studies minor. Introduced a decade ago, this minor has shrunk from a high of 15-20 students to a single student at most. The constituent courses would continue to be offered; all affected departments have been contacted and have agreed with the proposal to eliminate the minor. A thematic option in Interdisciplinary Studies remains for those students seeking a personalized course of study in this area.
Professor Maggie Faulkner moved and Professor Jay Zimmerman seconded the motion to eliminate the Irish Studies minor. The motion carried unanimously, with six votes in favor.
4. Associate Dean Louise Laurence presented revised proposals for changes to the BUAD Major;
the Accounting Major; the International Business and Management Concentrations and the Legal Studies Track of the BUAD Major; the Combined Majors in e-Business and Computer Information Systems and e-Business and Business Administration (Marketing); and the Major in e-Business.
As discussed in the November meeting of the University Curriculum Committee, CBE proposes to drop COSC 111 as a requirement from all BUAD concentrations and tracks. CBE also would like to initiate a screening requirement of a Computer Proficiency Examination. CBE anticipates administering this test (the SAM test) monthly, at a fee of $20. The Accounting Program, meanwhile, will retain COSC 111 as a requirement. Accounting will also employ the Computer Proficiency Examination to screen majors.
For the International Business Concentration and the Management Concentrations of the BUAD major, the addition of MNGT 494 as an elective was discussed in the November Committee meeting. Note that for International Business, MKTG/MNGT 479 (Special Topics) and POSC 341 (African Government and Politics; no longer offered) have now been dropped as electives.
The Legal Studies Track proposals, including the increase to 24 units, choice of either MNGT 482 or PHIL 371, and new system of electives (four courses from Legal Studies and two from Interdisciplinary areas) were discussed in the November Committee meeting.
For the Accounting Major, the option to take MNGT 482 as an alternative to PHIL 371 and the addition of BUSX 460 were discussed at the November Committee meeting.
As requested by the Committee, Professor Laurence provided copies of correspondence between CBE and the Philosophy Department (regarding the BUAD major/Legal Studies track’s option to take MNGT 482 instead of PHIL 371) as well as the Computer Sciences Department (regarding the elimination of COSC 111 as a BUAD, e-Business, and Combined Majors requirement). Professor Laurence also provided an email from the Academic Standards Committee (regarding their approval of the initiation of the Computer Proficiency Exam as a screening mechanism).
Errata: For the BUAD Major listing, the Entrepreneurship Track (with 21-24 units) should be listed and the lower-level core courses adjusted to 18 units. The Combined Major in e-Business and Computer Information Systems should indicate a total of 130 units. The Combined Major in e-Business and Business Administration (Marketing) should indicate 122 units.
Professor Faulkner moved and Professor Greg Faller seconded the motion to
approve the changes. The motion carried unanimously, with six votes in
favor.
5. The UCC meeting adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Shana M. Gass
Secretary, University Curriculum Committee
