UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

Minutes

December 12, 2005

Professor Toni Marzotto called the meeting of the University Curriculum Committee to order at 3:35 p.m. in the Towson Room (Cook 507) of Cook Library.  She reminded the committee that proposed course changes go to UCC’s Course Approval Subcommittee and changes to graduate and certificate programs go to the Graduate Studies Committee. The minutes of the November 14, 2005 UCC meeting were accepted as written.

Professor June Yum from Mass Communication and Communication Studies presented the proposal for the course changes in the Communication Studies major.    Professor Nechie King moved and Professor Jay Zimmerman seconded a motion to approve the program changes.  The motion carried with 7 in favor and 1 abstaining.

Professor George Georgiou, chair of the Economics Department, asked that UCC approve ECON 305 as an elective for the Economics major and minor.  Professor Nechie King moved and Professor J. J. Lee Professor seconded a motion to approve the change.  The motion carried unanimously.

Professor George Georgiou, chair of the Economics Department, presented a proposal to change the current Economics requirement for 12 credits of upper division Economics electives to 12 credits of Economics electives at either the upper or lower division level.  Professor Leneida Crawford moved and Professor Jay Zimmerman seconded a motion to table the proposal because the current catalog requires that a minor include a minimum of 12 upper division credits.  The motion carried unanimously.

Professor David Zang, chair of the Kinesiology Department asked that UCC approve the deletion of the Sports Studies major.  Professor Nechie King moved and Professor Leneida Crawford seconded the motion that the proposal to delete the Sports Studies major be approved pending the receipt of:

1) signed paperwork from the CHP Curriculum Committee.

2) copies of letters to students who are current majors to inform them that they will be able to complete the program if they are a declared Sport Studies major.

3) and copies of letters to new students who have expressed interest in the major to notify them that the major will no longer be available.

The motion carried unanimously.

Professor Maria Fracasso, dean of the Honors College, asked that UCC approve changes to the Honors College curriculum that will bring it up to national standards.  Professor Jay Zimmerman moved and Karla Kubitz seconded the motion to approve the changes.  The motion carried with 8 in favor and 1 abstaining.

Professor Doug Prior asked UCC how get approval to change, expand or cross list Sociology and Anthropology course codes to support the development of Criminal Justice course codes.  UCC advised that the changes be sent to the UCC Course Review Subcommittee using Form B for changes, Form A for expansions, and Form B to cross list.

Mr. Robert Giordani, the registrar, pointed out the inconsistency between the minimum number of course credit requirements for majors, concentrations and tracks and the actual the course credits required in the catalog.  There are 25 tracks that do not meet the 24credit minimum and 5 concentrations that do not meet the 24credit minimum.   The discussion was tabled until February when Professor Toni Marzotto will report on the number of credit hours required by MHEC for a concentration.

The contact information for members of the Towson University Curriculum Committee 2005-2006 was verified by UCC members with one correction. Tracy Miller (tmiller@towson.edu) will replace Lynne Dowell as an Ex-Officio member representing Academic Advising.

The UCC subcommittee issues will be addressed in January 2006.

The UCC meeting adjourned at 5:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
