UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

Minutes

November 8, 2004

Professor Buchbinder called the second meeting of the University Curriculum Committee to order at 3:30 p.m. in the Towson Room of Cook Library.  She asked those present to introduce themselves.

The first item on the agenda was the proposed change in Family Studies.  Professor Eskow was present to answer questions about the changes.  There are 170 students in the program and the changes will allow Towson to apply for a Human Service Education Accreditation in January 2005.  The Committee pointed out that the catalog copy should indicate the Gen Eds and that Professor Eskow should notify the Mass Communications Dept. about their one required course.  Professor Marzotto moved and Professor Kubitz seconded a motion to approve the changes in the Family Studies program.  The motion carried unanimously.

Professor Duncan and Professor Bergman were present to present the changes in the Bachelors in English program.  The major has been completely redone to eliminate the genre and period requirements.  The credits remain the same—21 for the core and 21 in the tracks.  The advantage of the proposal is that it will make it easier for transfers and will give students more electives.  It was pointed out that the Secondary Education “Concentration” must be called a “Track”.  Concentrations are approved by MHEC.  There was discussion about the 3 new courses that were included in the program.  They have not yet been approved by the College of Liberal Arts Curriculum Committee, nor by the Sub-Committee on Course Approvals.  It was also suggested that the Gen Ed courses be identified in the catalog copy.  Professor King moved and Mr. Ponda seconded a motion that the proposal to change the English Major be approved pending the approval of the 3 new courses by the College of Liberal Arts and the Sub-Committee on Course approvals by the December University Catalog deadline.  The motion carried 5-2.

The Committee had time to discuss changes in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies Minor.  The changes are a name changes for the minor and changes in disciple codes.  K. Webb will verify that the LGBT courses have been approved by the Sub-Committee on Course Approvals.  Professor Marzotto moved Professor King seconded a motion to approve the changes pending confirmation that the two courses have been approved.  The motion carried unanimously.

The Committee discussed making it a requirement that when changes are brought to the Committee that old and new programs should be presented to the Committee side by side.  T. Marzotto said she would check to see if this is already a requirement.

The Committee adjourned at 4:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
