UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

Minutes

October 16, 2006

Professor Toni Marzotto called the meeting of the University Curriculum Committee to order at 3:40 p.m. in the Towson Room (Cook 507) of Cook Library.

1. The minutes of the September 25 UCC meeting were accepted as written.

2. The committee reviewed the revised Annual Report for 2005-2006; the Report was accepted as written.

3. Professor Sharon Buchbinder, chair of Health Science, presented a proposed new minor in Health Science, comprised of a 21-unit core: (HLTH 101, 207, 204, and 222) along with an additional three upper-level HLTH electives, one of which can be a course in HCMN or GERO, which would be chosen with guidance by a minor advisor. The minor would benefit students from a variety of majors. Professor Sandra Tatman moved and Professor J.J. Lee seconded the motion to accept the proposal. The motion carried unanimously.

4. Professor David Zang, chair of Kinesiology, and Professor Michael Higgins of Kinesiology presented a proposal regarding the Athletic Training major. The major will increase from 54 to 56 credits, with 12 courses being altered, many with credit changes. At the same time, 12 credits in upper-division KNES electives will no longer be required for the major. Changes were inspired by the certification process, as well as a desire to recognize the large time commitment entailed by practica. Attention to the learning over time continuum in both classroom and clinical settings demands strong sequencing. While it was acknowledged that electives had been “broadening” for the Athletic Training majors, eliminating that requirement will have no impact on majors’ ability to become certified in the field.

Professor Jay Zimmerman moved that the proposal be accepted, pending approval for course changes from the Course Approval Reporting Committee; Professor Margaret Faulkner seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously.

5. The Committee reviewed a draft of the flow chart, “Towson Curriculum Process.” There were questions about how honors courses are processed. It was suggested that the Graduate Program and Graduate Course Forms box be eliminated. Another idea was to change the text for the oval now labeled Faculty Curriculum Committees to more concretely describe the intended action (to parallel the other ovals). A question arose about what precisely constitutes a track rather than an entirely new program. What necessitates a DOI? Mr. Giordani offered to clarify this by enquiring at the Provost’s Office.

6. It was suggested that the UCC web page specify that UCC forms be sent to Ms. Diane Cascella, CK 401, Cook Library, rather than to Ms. Shana Gass in care of Ms. Cascella. Ms. Gass will keep in touch with Ms. Cascella about what materials have been received.

7. The UCC meeting adjourned at 4:45 p. m.

Respectfully submitted,

Shana M. Gass

Secretary, University Curriculum Committee
