Professor Buchbinder called the meeting of the University Curriculum Committee to order at 3:35 p.m. in the Towson Room (Cook 507) of Cook Library. The minutes of the May 9, 2005 UCC meeting were accepted as written.
UCC members elected Professor Marzotto unanimously as the new UCC chair for FY06.
The Computer & Information Science Department’s representative, Professor Alex Wijesinha, reviewed the department’s proposal to offer a Computer Security track for the double major in Computer Science & Mathematics. The proposal tightens up the program for those interested in the Computer Security Track. Professor Nechie King moved and Professor Jonathan Mattanah seconded a motion to approve adding the Computer Security Track. The motion carried unanimously.
Professor Jane Williams and Professor Amy Pleet represented Special Education’s proposal to reorganize the Special Education undergraduate program so that students can graduate in four years certified in Special Education and “highly qualified” in a content area. The Committee tabled the Special Education proposal and asked that Professor Pleet list course prerequisites, review credit totals, and rearrange the catalog copy for clarity. Professor Pleet asked that committee members send her comments and suggestions.
Professor Douglas Pryor and Professor Marion Hughes represented their department on the reorganization of the Sociology concentration in the Sociology-Anthropology major. Professor Hughes explained that the course changes have already been approved. Professor Margaret Faulkner moved and Professor Karla Kubitz seconded a motion to approve the revised Sociology concentration. The motion carried unanimously.
Professor Doug Herman introduced a proposal to divide the Geography major into two tracks: a General track and a Global Skills track. The Committee explained that the Geography major makes a “General” track unnecessary. “Global Skills” fits as a track in the Geography major but the Committee asked that the hours required to meet the Modern Language requirement be explained more clearly in the proposal. The Committee tabled the Geography track proposal until the final copy incorporating the changes is available for review.
No representative from the History Department was available to present the Secondary History Education proposal, so discussion was tabled until the October meeting.
The examination of Options or Focus Areas within Concentrations was postponed until the October meeting.
Professor Marzotto asked the Committee to review the UCC web page at http://wwwnew.towson.edu/curriculum for sections that need to be updated.
The UCC meeting adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Yvonne T. Lev
