Professor Toni Marzotto called the meeting of the University Curriculum Committee to order at 3:30 p.m. in the Towson Room (Cook 507) of Cook Library. Professor Jay Zimmerman announced that UCC’s proposed Bylaws changes for UCC Course Approval and General Education subcommittees passed the University Senate with minor amendments. Professor Gail Gasparich and Professor Steve Scales, chairs of the respective “reporting” committees (formerly subcommittees), are eligible to vote on UCC issues. With the new changes, the reporting committee membership will be appointed through the AAUP President. Some adjustments will need to be made in the General Education Committee composition to reflect the college representation requirements written into the new bylaws.
1. The minutes of the April 10 UCC meeting were accepted as written.
2. Professor Kent Barnes, chair of the Geography and Environmental Planning Department, presented the proposal to extend the fast track Master’s option in Geography and Environmental Planning, combining the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree into a five year program, to all tracks in 1) General Geography and the 2) Environmental Geography and Planning tracks. Professor Nechie King moved and Professor Jay Zimmerman seconded the motion to accept the fast track Master’s program proposal for Geography and Environmental Planning tracks. The motion carried with 11 in favor and 1 abstention.
3. Professor Craig Johnson, chair of the Psychology Department, presented the proposal to no longer require Phil 101 or 111 as a prerequisite for Psychology courses. Professor Margaret Faulkner and Professor Leneida Crawford seconded a motion to accept the proposal. The motion carried with 11 in favor and 1 abstention.
4. Professor Alex Storrs, representing Astronomy, presented the proposal to replace ASTR 361 with ASTR 162 as a requirement for the Astronomy Minor and for the Astrophysics Track with in the Physics major. Professor Jay Zimmerman moved and Professor Eva Mengelkoch seconded a motion to accept the proposal. The motion carried unanimously.
5. Professor Toni Marzotto relayed a request from the College of Liberal Arts to consider two curriculum changes by e-mail. The UCC members agreed that it would be better to put those proposals on the September agenda.
6. UCC members reviewed the flowchart for “Steps in the Curriculum Process at TU” prepared by Professor Karla Kubitz. UCC members agreed that the flowchart was an improvement but thought it could benefit by adding more detail with pop-ups. Professor Toni Marzotto asked that UCC members send her suggestions for the flow chart by e-mail and that Professor Gail Gasparich and Professor Steve Scales send detailed information for the reporting committees to include in the pop-ups. Professor Karla Kubitz and Professor Toni Marzotto will work with CIAT to incorporate the pop-ups into the flowchart. Professor Toni Marzotto will send the revised flowchart to the College Curriculum Committee chairs and ask if it needs further clarification. The College Curriculum Committee chairs will be invited to the September UCC meeting to make sure that UCC procedures and policies are clear.
7. It was suggested that in the fall the Towson Room be reconfigured from its present long table to a square or rectangle where UCC members could see each other more easily.
8. The UCC meeting adjourned at 4:35 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Yvonne T. Lev
Secretary, University Curriculum Committee
