UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

Minutes

April 10, 2006

 

Professor Toni Marzotto called the meeting of the University Curriculum Committee to order at 3:40 p.m. in the Towson Room (Cook 507) of Cook Library. 

 

1.  The minutes of the March 13 UCC meeting were accepted as amended. 

 

2.  Professor Susan Isaacs, representative of the Art Department, presented the proposal to change the status of Art History from a concentration in Art to a major in Art History.  She explained that there would be no changes in course requirements or number of faculty.  When UCC members expressed concern about the clarity of the Art History major requirements, Professor Isaacs noted that it is unchanged from the FY06 Towson University Undergraduate Catalog.  Robert Giordani offered to work with the Art Department to clarify the language of requirements for the FY08 catalog.  Professor Margaret Faulkner moved and Professor Eva Mengelkoch seconded a motion to accept the proposal in concept, pending the receipt of the final copy of the proposal by UCC members before it is sent to MHEC.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

3.  Curriculum Forms are now listed under Forms, Policies & Handbooks on the Towson University webpage and are linked to the forms on the University Curriculum Committee webpage.

 

4. UCC members reviewed “Steps in the Curriculum Process at TU” for changes to be incorporated in the flowchart that Karla Kubitz is developing. 

Step 1:  Change “Cover Sheet” to “Program Approval Form (See Curriculum Forms)”

Step 2:  Change abbreviations for colleges: 

“GER” to “CGSR”; “CED” to “COE”; “CMS” to “FCSM”

Step 3:  Change “Undergraduate New or Changed Courses (300/400 or 400/500)” to

“Undergraduate/GRADUATE new or Changed Courses (300/500 or 400/500)

Step 4:  Change “University Catalog” to “Towson University Undergraduate Catalog.”

 

5.  Professor Toni Marzotto drafted a Form C Changes in Existing Programs to illustrate the format requirements for department proposing changes.  UCC members asked that text be added to say “Please highlight changes (Bold or Underline).”  Professor Jay Zimmerman moved and Professor J.J. Lee seconded the motion to approve Form C.  The motion carried unanimously.

 

6.  Professor Toni Marzotto presented Draft By-Laws for UCC Reporting Committees for review by UCC members.  The bylaws need to be updated to represent changes in the University.

B.  Changes:

• Change “Dean of the College of Graduate and Extended Education” to Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research”
• Change “Dean of the Library and V.P. for Information Technology” to “University Librarian.”

B.1a Changes:

• Change “faculty representatives” to “tenure/tenure track faculty”.
• Change “President of the Faculty Association” to “President of the AAUP/Faculty Association”
• Change “Dean of the College of Graduate Education and Research” to Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research.”
• Replace “4.  To oversee the development and approval of courses for online” with “4.  To communicate to departments the decisions reached.”
• Add “5.  To communicate to the University Curriculum Committee all decisions reached.”

 

B.1b Changes:   

• Change “faculty representatives” to “tenure/tenure track faculty”.
• Change “President of the Faculty Association” to “President of the AAUP/Faculty Association”
• Change “Dean of the College of Graduate Education and Research” to Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research.”
• Change “Dean of the Library and V.P. for Information Technology” to “University Librarian.”

Professor Margaret Faulkner moved and Professor J.J. Lee seconded a motion to approve the bylaws changes for the UCC reporting committees as amended.  The motion carried unanimously.  Professor Toni Marzotto will send the revised bylaws to Professor Tim Sullivan for the University Senate Executive Committee

 

7.  The UCC meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
