UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

Minutes

April 11, 2005

Professor Buchbinder called the meeting of the University Curriculum Committee to order at 3:35 p.m. in the Towson Room in Cook Library.  The minutes of the March 28th minutes were corrected to show that M. Chambers was representing J.J. Lee and he was not representing the College Curriculum Committee.  The corrected minutes were approved as distributed.  The agenda was reordered to accommodate the guests.

Professors Laufer and King were present to discuss the proposal for the Deaf Studies/Elementary Education Double Major.  There had been problems advising students who were interested in these two majors, so the curriculum was closely mapped out to give elementary education students an escape hatch and to spread out the internships.  A minor correction in a math course numbering was pointed out.  The double major will be 142 credits and could be completed in 9 semesters.  Professor Mattanah moved and Professor Dombrowski seconded a motion to approve the Deaf Studies/Elementary Education Double Major.  The motion carried unanimously.

Professor Downing explained the changes in the Sport Management program.  The proposal moves the core to 27 credits and eliminates their option II as a way for students to complete the Sport Management major.  It also creates a track in Campus Recreation Services which currently has many employment opportunities.  In response to the question about students currently in option II, Professor Downing said they would be allowed to continue and finish their programs.  Professor King moved and Professor Kubitz seconded a motion to approve the proposed changes in the Sport Management Program.  The motion carried unanimously.

Professor Whitman presented the changes in the History Major.  The changes allow students great freedom in choosing upper division courses and reduce the number they have to take of lower division courses.  It will also require a 100UIE History course and this may necessitate more UIE sections in the future.  The changes bring the major to 45 credits.  Professor Dombrowski moved and Professor Sarhangi seconded a motion to approve the changes in the History major.  The motion carried unanimously.

The motion to add the Head of Academic Advising or her/his designee to the list of ex-officio members of the University Curriculum Committee carried unanimously and will be forwarded to the University Senate.

The change in the Community Health Concentration was discussed next.  Currently HLTH 402/502 is an elective and the proposal is to make it a requirement for the Community Health Concentration.  Professor King moved and Professor Dombrowski seconded a motion to approve the change.  The motion carried unanimously.

During the discussion of the proposal for a change in the German minor, Professor Dombrowski stated that the University should require more language training.  Mr. Giordiani moved and Professor Mattanah seconded to accept the change in the German minor.  The motion carried with one abstention.

Professor King and Professor Sarhangi moved that the course changes in the Business, Communications, Liberal Arts Minor be accepted.  The motion carried unanimously.

Professor Mengelkoch explained the rationale behind the change in requirement for MUSC 493.  The permission of the Chair is needed to insure that it will be as rigorous as other upper level music courses.  The wording in the catalog will clarify this.  This course will be on the agenda of the next Sub Committee on Course Approvals.  Ms Miller and Mr. Giordani moved that the change be approved pending approval of the Sub Committee on Course Approvals.  This motion carried unanimously.

Professor Buchbinder expressed the thanks of the committee for Ms Hofstetter’s work on the committee.  She also announced that elections for a new chair will take place during the May meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Eleanore O. Hofstetter, Secretary
