Minutes
March 10, 2008
1. The minutes of the December 10 meeting were accepted as written.
2. Professor Trace Miller presented a proposal to change the Painting Track to the Painting and Drawing Track. Drawing is now considered a discipline it in its own right, rather than merely auxiliary; the proposed change will enable students to focus on Drawing if they wish. ART 372, Drawing III (currently Advanced Drawing), will now be a required course. Students would then take either Advanced Painting or Drawing (400-level); students will also choose electives according their painting or drawing interests. Some required courses (ART 402 and 346) will now be electives. Students will be able to choose any printmaking course as an elective.
Professor Jay Zimmerman moved and Professor Leneida Crawford seconded the motion to accept the proposed changes. The motion carried unanimously, with 8 votes in favor.
3. Professor Marcie Weinstein presented a proposal to make changes to the Allied Health major. In the past, Allied Health has not had its own HEGIS code; a unique new code, AHLT, would help prevent the courses from being “lost” in the catalog. New courses which have been submitted (AHLT 313/513, 411, and 445 (sic)/545, are all electives. The content has not changed, just the codes. A new dual enrollment program, beginning in Fall 2008, will not be negatively affected by the new HEGIS. The Bachelor’s Degree in Technical and Professional Studies is an articulated program: students take their technical courses at community colleges, the more theoretical coursework at Towson.
Ms. Tracy Miller moved and Ms. Shana Gass seconded the motion to accept the proposed changes. The motion carried unanimously, with 8 votes in favor.
4. Professor Richard Preisler presented proposed changes to the Chemistry major. CHEM 210, a core course for the General and Professional tracks, will increase one unit, to five units. This additional hour will comprise introductory material, including instruction in lab techniques, material in statistics, and data handling (error analysis).
In response to a question about how the extra hour would affect the time matrix, Professor Preisler explained that the contact hours would remain the same; the labs are scheduled in the afternoon and the pacing is left fairly open. Is it true that students taking CHEM 213/215 cannot take CHEM 210? It was determined that CHEM 213/215 had not been offered in 10 years, and should be dropped from the catalog.
It is helpful for proposals to include track unit totals. The General track will rise to 59-61 units; the Professional track will be 66-68 units.
Professor Jay Zimmerman moved
and Professor Leneida Crawford seconded the motion to accept the proposed
changes. The motion carried unanimously, with 8 votes in favor.
5. There were questions about the absolute deadline for getting approved changes into the next year’s catalog. Approved changes can still make it into the online version, but not into the print version. The other option is to submit (probably minor changes only) to Daniel Fuchs in the Administration building, room 413, during Galley Review, March 10-12. (The Daily Digest indicated any changes longer than a sentence should be brought in electronic and hard copy.)
6. There was discussion concerning the “hard” deadline for proposals to be submitted the week prior to UCC meetings. Historically, UCC packets have gone out Monday morning the week before the meeting (mail comes between 10 and 11am) to allow ample time for delivery to committee members. Recently several proposals have arrived after the packets have been sent out. Some misdirection of Forms has also occurred. The Committee was supportive about revising the verbiage on the UCC web site to:
Please submit proposals so
that they arrive no later than 9am on the Monday one week prior to the
scheduled meeting, to ensure timely delivery to UCC members. Proposals
arriving after monthly meeting materials have been distributed will be added to
the following month's agenda.
NOTE: The University Curriculum Committee reviews proposals submitted on Form C (Changes in Existing Programs).
Proposals submitted on Form A or Form B (New Course/Course Change) should be directed to the Chair of the Course Approval Reporting Committee.
We may want to consider electronic submissions at a later date.
7. The UCC meeting adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Shana M. Gass
Secretary, University Curriculum Committee
