UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE

Minutes

March 28, 2005

Professor Buchbinder called the special meeting of the University Curriculum Committee and the College Curriculum Chairs to order at 3:30 p.m. in the Cook Library.  She asked those present to introduce themselves.  Representing College Curriculum Committees were L. Smith, F. Newman, G. Faller, B. Merryman, C. Cooper, and M. Chambers.

Gail Gasparich explained the workings of the Sub Committee on Course Approvals.  She indicated that it would not be necessary to send 12 copies for a course deletion or for title or vocabulary changes.

Mike O’Pecko discussed the Sub Committee on Gen Ed Approvals.  This group meets as needed.  It likes to have the Course Approvals finished but will accept simultaneous submissions.  It has “learning goals” for some categories of the Gen Eds.  Mike expects that in the next three years there will be an evaluation of the Gen Eds.

Sharon Buchbinder reviewed the workings of the University Curriculum Committee.  This committee deals with programs and it is important to understand which types of programs must go off campus for system or MHEC approval.  Where required courses for a program are offered by another department, it is important to have letters of support from those departments for any changes.  It is helpful for the sponsors of proposed programs to come to the University Curriculum Committee meetings to explain the proposal.

Kevin Webb said that once a course is approved the numbering goes right into PeopleSoft.  There is also paper confirmation sent to the College Curriculum Chairs.

Guests suggested several wording changes to the forms.  A suggestion was made that documents be sent to an administrative assistant of the Dean of a College because faculty rotate out of committees and it is not always clear where materials should be sent.

The meeting adjourned at 5:10 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Eleanore O. Hofstetter, Secretary
