Recuento y Treno
Composed for Christian Colberg

Recuento y Treno is an elegy for Yordanis Marin, a childhood friend and an exemplary person. The death of this bright young man touched my heart and the hearts of all who knew him. Yordanis Marin died on march 13, 1999 at the age of 21, in Havana, Cuba. During my returned to Cuba this past summer, I stayed with the family of Yordanis. I experienced the grief of family and friends. His early death represented the lost of a son, the lost of a brother the lost of a friend. For those who knew him best, the loss of many hopes and dreams, and the loss of a good man.
He was a different type of man...the young man of a frank smile.

This is an excerpt from Elegy for Yordy, a poem written by Carmen Laura.
...God sculpted him to his image and he was born a boy, star, man and hope. He came with tons of joy, with endless kisses, with the look of an angel, with immortal dreams, with light in his eyes. ...but having God need for angels, tender and pure. He requested the presence of our prince. The earth was left in darkness the hearts of man and corals were broken, tears filled the world. ... then God was moved to mercy; he sent messengers of all kind. "the boy-man is saved, my kingdom is his home it won't be long until you meet again."

Recuento y Treno  (Account and Threnody) is constructed in three sections:

The computer music is derived from the viola music. Using software such as soundhack and SonicWorx, the pre-recorded viola music is transformed. This piece makes use of seven pre-recorded digital sound files. Each file is played interactively with the performer, using a Power Macintosh running MAX software.
