Explores the question of the nature of beauty as the music progresses from open form into precise notation.  This piece was written at the request of Professor Renaldo Reyes.

A combination of spoken text, recitative, and song underscored by the piano, this piece is based on the story of the Nightingale.  Now, the tale is set in a West African village, and tells the story of a little mute girl, Nahtingweleh.

The percussion ensemble afforded me the opportunity to experiment with West African rhythmic elements, and explore shifting timbre.  And expanded harmonic structure roots the piece.  These harmonies function as rhythmic events and also provide melodic motives and motion.

for High Voice and Piano (3'30")

An art song based on a text of Robert Louis Stevenson taken from A Child's Garden of Verses.  This piece rings with a childlike innocence as it delves into the realm of dreams.

for Flute, Bassoon, and Piano with Djembe and Ankle Bells (7'30")

An ecclectic mix of influences including jazz, broadway, alternative rock, as well as post-modern composers.  This work was written for the Mosaic Trio.

for Orchestra (5')

Written for the final project of my Advanced Arranging course, this piece explores orchestral techniques.  Melodies evolve out of texture and grow to fruition in gestures.

A vibrant celebration!  Explores cellular composition techniques, and utilizes my interest in African rhythms.  This piece was written for the TU Symphonic Band.

A setting of the traditional hymn, this piece preserves the melody, but places it in the midst of turmoil.  This turns the beautiful melody into a call for peace.

for SSAATTBB Choir (5')

A brief, but rich poem becomes the source for an entire fantasy journey through the realm of dreams.  Reveling through landscapes, the piece finally culminates with the first lucid presentation of the full text.

for Bassoon and Piano (7'30")

These two pieces, tho written 3 years appart, were designed to go together.  In them, the rolling hills of Scotland come to life.

Exploration of more complex harmonic ideas, and practice in the art of text setting.  Drawing from five brief quotes, these miniatures form a quiltwork that is at once coherent and diverse.
