Be Still My Soul
The hymn tune, "Be Still My Soul," has always been one of my favorites.  There is something about the melody that is restful, and fulfilling.  But in the text itself is a call to God for peace.  It is for this reason that I decided to take the peaceful melody and set it in a context of turmoil.

Through this turmoil, the soprano uses this beautiful tune to call out "Be Still My Soul."  At the same time, the alto provides a counterpoint that is often in dissonant counterpoint to the soprano melody.  As the piece progresses, the two begin to work more harmoniously until stillness is at last achieved.

The brass in this piece interject, sometimes harmoniously, and some times in dissonance.  With the shifting meters, and the overlapping phrases, these two instruments create the backdrop for the piece; the storm from which the voices call.
