Maurice Ravel once said, “If you have something to say, this something will never emerge more distinctly than in your unintended unfaithfulness to a model.”
In the spring of 2004, I was researching the music of Igor Stravinsky and I came across 4 etudes that he had written for piano. I found these etudes to be extremely interesting in their use of harmony, counterpoint, and playing technique so I decided to try and write my own piano set using Stravinsky’s etudes as a general model. I also decided to utilize characteristics of some of my favorite dance forms but allowed myself the freedom to deviate whenever I felt it made things more interesting. The result is Movement, a Stravinskian dance suite and my unfaithfulness to the model.
