LAKE BODIES SEE LIGHT (2003)
for string quartet and piano

Lake Bodies See Light is about imaginary aquatic creatures who see the night sky for the first time and, as a result, feel a new sense of wonder and awe about the world they inhabit.

As the piece begins, the quartet plays a lively and playful passage which represents the "lake bodies." When the piano (the "light") enters at the halfway point, the mood of the piece shifts to become more introspective and static. Tension builds as the creatures become more fearful of the unknown, but their fear is assuaged by the realization that they are connected by the essence of life and not alone in the vast expanse of their newly discovered world.
