program notes:
Tears Don't Flow in this Place is the product of several different compositional procedures melding together.  It is convoluted chords- it is parallel unison. It is solo- it is ensemble.  There are eight woodwind players, all of whom are individual, yet all of whom at times fuse into one instrument.  The trumpets are the unseen influence that initiate new sections and provide material for variation.  Percussion is used to commentate on the musical activity as the intensity waxes and wanes.  The mixtures of timbres and feelings create an ever shifting texture- a sense of searching for a single identity- which is achieved at the denouement of the piece.
