Sun Angel
Program notes
Sun Angel is my first
significant endeavor for solo piano. I originally began composing for piano
several years ago, but nothing of this magnitude. In the fall of 2004, Solange
Guillaume and I were discussing her interest in new works for piano. I
mentioned that I was working on such a piece and asked if she would be
interested in debuting the work and performing it on my recital. She and I
worked together for a year to fine tune the finished product. The work uses
reiterated focal tones throughout each section that are an ever-present
connecting thread that can be traced during the performance. The harmonies
involve chords with consistently expanding intervals while the full range of
the piano is explored with chords, arpeggios, and syncopated rhythmic passages.
