Hand [RK] Ice
Program notes
When deciding on the works to be presented on my MM recital, I realized I wanted an additional work that was shorter and lighter in character to end the recital. Hand [RK] Ice, for marimba, uses contrasting sections with abrupt changes and interruption of ideas while making full use of the instrument’s available range. The piece uses very specific dynamic markings and articulations that create stark contrasts. The title uses the letters of Dane Krich’s name mixed up to form new words (with two letters left over!). This reflects how ideas and harmonies in the piece are often mixed from one section to the next to create the ongoing sense of contrasts and interruptions.
