| This is one of the first works I composed after moving
to Maryland from Portland, Oregon. In Portland, I had been attending
Portland State University (PSU) and had been playing guitar in schools
Big Band. There were a couple of Latin charts that really got me
juiced on Latin rhythms. Also in my last semester at PSU I took choral
arranging. I spent a lot of time in this class searching for possible
texts to set, and I kept coming back to Psalm 100.
So I arrived in Maryland with thoughts of Latin music, Psalm 100 and choral scores swimming through my head. The result of these thoughts is Salmo 100. I chose to set Psalm 100 to a suite of Latin inspired rhythms, and to stick with the Latin theme, I set the text in Spanish. The five stanzas are set in the following order: salsa, tango, salsa, bossanova, and salsa. |

1. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. 2. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. 3. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. 5. For the Lord is good: his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. |
