Brenda Fike Hired as Media Specialist for White House Historical Association

Congratulations to Winter MFA Art graduate, Brenda Fike (Photography and Art History). She was just hired as a Media Specialist for the White House Historical Association, located by the White House.

COFAC Faculty Artists Win Maryland Awards

Three members of the faculty in the College of Fine Arts and Communication have received Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Awards. The artists are Eva Mengelkoch from the Department of Music, Nora Sturges from the Department of Art, and Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell, Department of Dance.The Maryland State Arts Council awarded a total of 97 artists in celebration of the 10th Maryland Arts Day.

Towson Students Win Music Competition

Two Towson University students won the Dr. Sidney Lieberman Music Competition 2008. Michael Lao Cu won first place with his performance on piano, whereas Julia Kisielewska won second place on cello. A recital was held in their honor on April 17 2008 at the Harold J. Kaplan Concert Hall.

USSEA International Luncheon 2008

Dr. Katherine Broadwater, Assistant Professor, Department of Art, received the Edwin Ziegfeld award on March 29th at the NAEA National Conference in New Orleans. She presented the work that she initiated and has sustained for 14 years at Towson University in partnership with Baltimore City for undeserved children. USSEA (United States Society for Art Education ) presents the Edwin Ziegfeld Awards annually to honor one American and one international art educator who have made an outstanding and internationally recognized contribution to art education through exceptional records of achievement in scholarly writing, research, professional service, or community service.

Tim Miller comes to TU

Tim Miller

Internationally acclaimed solo performance artist Tim Miller is in residence, doing a week-long workshop with the Theatre MFA students. A showing of work from the workshop will take place on Tuesday, March 11 at 8 pm in the MFA Lab.

Kennedy Center Award 2008

Assitant professsor Vincent Thomas has been selected as one of the three recipients for the 2008 Kennedy Center Millenium Stage Local Dance Commissioning Projects. He will premier this work titled Witness, in September 2008. The Millenium Stage Local Dance Commissioning Project nurtures the creation of new work in dance and presents them to a wide audience via the Millenium Stage, the Kennedy Center's free daily performance series. Each work will premier during the company's own hour-long Millenium Stage performance during the September 2008 Prelude Festival.

Jonathan Leshnoff pays tribute to war victims

Jonathan Leshnoff

TU faculty Jonathan Leshnoff unveiled his latest work entitled "Requiem for the Fallen" with the Handel Choir of Baltimore and the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. Though he was compelled by the atrocities of the Iraq War, the work itself did not make specific references of any war. Leshnoff has effectively composed a solemn piece that accommodates a message of hope."

Prof Dale Rauschenberg donates to university

Professor Dale Rauschenberg, long-time percussion faculty, made a leadership gift to the college's general endowment upon his retirement from the university. In thanks for his generosity and lifetime of commitment to arts education, the university has named his former studio space within the Center for the Arts building in his honor. Rauschenberg founded the percussion program in 1966, and was Towson's first and only full-time percussion instructor for 41 years. He founded the Towson University Jazz Ensemble in 1966 and the Towson University Percussion Ensemble in 1967. His students have gone on to numerous prestigious music schools for graduate study and performed with major symphony orchestras."

Gary Rubin releases and performs new album

COFAC alumnus, Gary Rubin ('69), Vice President of University Advancement, recorded a CD, It's My Life, and performed at Della Notte restaurant in Baltimore's Little Italy."

Gilbert A. Brungardt honored with endowment

The Asian Arts Advisory Board and friends of the Asian Arts & Culture Center established an endowment honoring Gilbert A. Brungardt, who served as dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication from 1970 to 1991. The Dr. Gilbert A. Brungardt Endowment for the Benefit of the Asian Arts & Culture Center will provide permanent support for the center's activities., events and exhibits."

MCCS hosts Russian student exchange

The Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies hosted an exchange of 10 public relations students and faculty from Electrotechnical University in St. Petersburg, Russia from 2/8/08 through 2/16/08. This follows from April 2007 when four of our MCCS students took part in the Electrotechnical annual all-Russian conference."

Sculptor Nannette Clapman releases fourth book

COFAC alumna, Nannette Blinchikoff (75/84) is a sculptor who has also fashioned a career of helping other artists promote themselves and their artwork. Efficient marketing requires artists to realize that their art is a product, then create a promotional package, target geographical areas, and inform the public their product is available for sale. Blinchikoff's fourth book, Promoting Art with Integrity: The Business of Art deals with the policies, practices and procedures of art galleries, art councils and art organizations."

Arts Integration Institute recognized

The Arts Integration Institute, directed by Susan Rotkovitz, was recognized by the Dana Foundation as one of 24 premier programs in the US, noted for "their exemplary training of the art educator."

 

Calendar of Events

Recognized as a thriving visual arts center for Maryland, the college offers music performances, films, dance concerts, debates, lectures and workshops, theatre productions, a daily campus television show, and art exhibitions.
