About the College
Message from the Dean
Welcome to the College of Fine Arts and Communication!
When I talk about our students, faculty and staff, the words that come to mind include: Dynamic. Risk-takers. Thinking artists/communicators. Advocates. Surprise makers.
These are characteristics that encompass the excitement and passion of being involved in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) in any of our disciplines: Art, Dance, Electronic Media and Film, Mass Communication and Communication Studies, Music and Theatre.
COFAC has 100 full-time faculty, more than 200 part-time professionals in the area who enjoy sharing their expertise with students, and 30 staff who support more than 2,900 undergraduate and graduate students. We inhabit (some would say invade) five buildings on campus, including the new and renovated 300,000 square foot Center for the Arts. We added a new music recital hall, a new black box theatre, four dance studios, a MFA art gallery, and all kinds of new teaching spaces and studios. It is indeed a treat for everyone who works here or visits.
Throughout the year we offer:
more than 100 music performances
-
at least 26 student films, 17 dance events, and any number of public debates
-
no less than 4 main stage plays
-
a daily campus television show
-
eight to 10 art exhibitions
Graduate classes for our Master of Fine Arts programs in art and theatre, and our master's degree programs in communication studies and music performance, are purposefully small. We know it works. Our students are increasingly international, our interdisciplinary work is applauded, and our graduates are doing amazing things in the world.
We also sponsor the Asian Arts & Culture Center, Children's Dance, and the Community Arts Center. We co-sponsor the Baltimore Urban Debate League, the Web site for Baltimore Stories, the Music Preparatory program, the Silver Penny Theatre, WMJF television, and the Dance Team, among other programs.
As you see, we are a vibrant and busy college. Thanks for checking us out!
