Program Description

The mission of the College of Education at Towson University is to inspire, educate, and prepare educators as facilitators of active learning for diverse and inclusive communities of learners in environments that are technologically advanced. The Master of Education in Secondary Education is an advanced program of study that provides opportunities for middle and high school teachers to deepen their understanding of research-based practices in teaching subject matter to diverse learners. The program is designed for teachers seeking advanced professional certification from the Maryland State Department of Education. Completion of the program does not award certification. Its mission and goals are aligned with the College of Education mission statement and the core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). The mission is addressed by helping educators attain the following seven goals.

Develop advanced competencies in curriculum development and instructional design.

Develop an understanding of the diverse nature of learners and society.

Assume leadership roles in the profession.

   Use technology to enhance learning.

  •  Understand and use appropriate assessment and evaluation (Assessment Literacy).

    Engage in scholarly activities.

Think and reflect critically about the educational process and professional practice (Essential

     Dispositions for Educators).

The program is anchored by a core of courses covering five domains: curriculum development and instructional design; diversity and learning; scholarly inquiry and technology applications; assessment and evaluation; and teacher leadership. Elective courses develop students' expertise in content areas, special education, leadership, and instructional technology.

A thesis is optional. Students electing the non-thesis option must take an additional elective.

The degree can be completed through part-time study. The majority of secondary Master of Education candidates are teaching, employed full-time in area middle and high schools. Courses are offered in the late afternoons, evenings, weekends and summers.
