DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL

Joppa View Elementary School is located in the Perry Hall community of Baltimore County and is part of the Baltimore County Public School System. The school was opened in October, 1990. Shortly after opening, an additional building was constructed to alleviate over-crowded conditions. For the 2001-2002 school year, approximately 625 students are enrolled in grades ranging from Pre-Kindergarten to grade five. We have a diverse student population and strive to assure every student meets with success. All of the in-district students who attend Joppa View Elementary are eligible for transportation to and from school. Before and after-school care is located at the school and is provided by the Open Door, Inc. Joppa View boasts a dedicated and qualified staff of teachers and support personnel. Teachers volunteer to organize and supervise before and after-school clubs, such as: Sign Language, Chess, Literary Magazine, Instrumental Music, Scenery and more. Additionally, the school promotes the philosophy of enjoyable life-long physical fitness through various evening programs. In addition to providing a quality, rigorous, and challenging academic program for the children of Joppa View, the staff also participates in a faculty chorus and faculty band, entertaining the students and parents twice a year. The students at Joppa View Elementary School have proven to be avid readers. By selecting reading as an independent activity, the student body collectively earned more than 600,000 points last year through the use of an on-line reading program, Book Adventure. By using resources over the internet, the boys and girls from Pre-Kindergarten to grade 5 have learned to utilize a search engine and database to locate books they have read or would like to read in conjunction with our reading incentive program. For the 2001-2002 school year, Joppa View has embarked on Reading Road Trip U.S.A., stopping at significant geographic points along the way, such as Seuss Landing and the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead. The school has also adopted the D.E.A.R. program, where all school personnel and visitors Drop Everything and Read during specified time periods. Parental support in the school is phenomenal. The JVE Volunteer program, which is sponsored by the JVE PTA involves more than 100 parent volunteers. Whether assisting in the classroom or at home, tutoring individual students or working with small groups, their impact is very much noticed in having our students achieve academically. Joppa View Elementary School is a great place for children to learn, teachers to teach, volunteers to help, and parents to entrust their young.

A little bit about the PTA

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL The entire faculty, staff, and PTA welcome the opportunity for Joppa View to be a Professional Development School. The collaboration and partnership with Towson University will benefit the college interns and our teachers. Most importantly, our students will be supported through the findings and implementation of our shared action research. There is quality instruction occurring in our school, delivered by a caring and dedicated staff of life-long learners. The Site Based Steering Committee and the P.D.S. Network Coordinating Council are providing invaluable learning leadership and training for us. We look forward to 2002-2003 when the interns begin their student teaching experience at Joppa View. As an alumnus of Towson University, I am especially honored to be part of this exciting new endeavor for our school. I believe this university partnership as defined in our Professional Development School will be an important part of school improvement.

MISSION STATEMENT

Joppa View Elementary School embraces the mission of Baltimore County Public Schools in forming productive members of our society who are active participants in the democratic process. To achieve this end, we collaboratively support an instructional program which will prepare students with the skills necessary to function as leaders in the twenty-first century. A committee of teachers, parents and students of Joppa View Elementary School has established high standards and expectations.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE COLLABORATION

This paired-site model evolved from a year-long internship arrangement into a PDS that was launched June 2001 with PDS Summer Strategic Planning and monthly follow-up sessions throughout Fall 2001. Our first cohort of interns arrived January 28, 2002. These interns have experienced on-site course delivery and two internship placements--one at each school--during the Spring 2002 semester. They will return to those same classrooms for their student teaching internship in Fall 2002. Inservice educators have already earned graduate credit for on-site courses with additional course offerings planned for summer and fall 2002.
