MAT Sequence of Courses

Forty-two units of course work are required to complete the M.A.T. program in the Early Childhood or Elementary General Education Tracks.  The M.A.T. program in Secondary Education requires forty units of course work to include thirty-seven graduate units and three undergraduate units in secondary methods. The required courses are:

EDUC 797 Internship I with Seminar (6)**

** Please note that a $200 lab fee is attached to this course.  Students must complete a minimum of one full day of internship each week in a Professional  Development School (PDS) as a requirement for this course.  However, please note that One-Year Option students will spend a minimum of two internship days each week in their PDS placement.  Taken concurrently with EDUC 734 in the semester prior to Internship II.  EDUC 797 must be completed successfully in order to enter EDUC 798.

EDUC 798  Internship II with Seminar (6)**

**Please note that a $500 lab fee is attached to this course. All students complete 18 weeks of full-time, five-day/week internship in a public school setting in a Professional Development School (PDS).  Completed in the final semester. A  grade of "S" must be earned to successfully complete the program and graduate.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

For each course that follows, a prerequisite of admission to the M.A.T. program or permission of the Program Director is standard.  Additional prerequisites are listed following individual course descriptions.

Core Curriculum Courses

EDUC 730 Principles of Learning, Development and Diversity (3)

Participants examine current theories and research on the nature of learning and the corresponding role of development and culture in the teaching-learning process.  A framework for effective teaching that is based upon an understanding of best practices will be established.

EDUC 731 Curriculum and Assessment (3)

Students will examine the foundations of school curriculum and explore linkages between assessment-based curriculum and instructional strategies.  This course will examine actual school practices, the teacher's role in curriculum development, and the role of assessment in curriculum development.  Students will formulate their own theories and views related to current trends, innovations, and issues in curriculum and assessment.

EDUC 734 The Teacher as Researcher (3)

Theory and methodology for conducting classroom research with an emphasis on descriptive research approaches. Prerequisite: Consent of Program Coordinator.  Must be completed concurrent with Internship I in the semester prior to Internship II. 

EDUC 797 Internship I with Seminar (3-6)

Participants will explore best practices for creating and maintaining a positive and productive learning environment. Participants analyze a variety of learner characteristics that influence student development and academic achievement, including gender, ethnicity, physiology, values, family, and geographic regions, as is appropriate for age/grade level and professional specialization. Completed concurrent with EDUC 734 in the semester prior Internship II. Participants complete extended field experience (as determined by the Program Coordinator and MSDE requirements.)  Please note that a $200 lab fee is attached to this course.

EDUC 798 Internship II with Seminar (6)

Supervised teaching experiences at the appropriate school level for students in the M.A.T. program. The teacher candidate spends an extended semester of 18 weeks in a professional development school working with a school-based teacher mentor and a university mentor. The seminar is conducted throughout the semester and addresses topics appropriate for age/grade level and professional specialization.  The internship and seminar are a continuation of the field experience in Internship I. Prerequisite: Approval of Early Childhood, Elementary, or Secondary Education Department and Program Coordinator.  Please note that a $500 lab fee is attached to this course.

 

Early Childhood (ECED) and Elementary Education (ELED)

EDUC 717 Children's Literature and Other Materials To Teach Reading (3)

An in-depth examination of a variety of texts and other media for teaching reading, with particular emphasis on children's literature and reading software.  Participants will explore those texts and other media, which can be used for the purposes of reading and which support students' long-term motivation to become independent readers.  Strategies for selecting and evaluating materials that are appropriate for students of varied abilities will be examined.

ECED 618/ELED 611 Processes and Acquisitions of Literacy (3)

Study of the theoretical foundations of reading and language.  Exploration of theories and research perspectives on language and literacy development, the nature of reading and writing processes, and factors influencing the acquisition of literacy.


EDUC 787 Instructional Practices in the Development of Literacy (3)

An internship with a mentor teacher provides an opportunity for an M.A.T. candidate to focus on understanding and demonstrating a balanced approach to teaching reading.  The intern will develop a reading portfolio to complete the knowledge and performance expectations of the experience.  Completed concurrent with EDUC 797.

ECED/ELED 621 Literacy Assessment (3)

Examination of theories and principles of classroom literacy assessment.  Practice using a range of formal and informal techniques for assessing reading and writing, and using assessment data to plan instruction.Completed concurrent with EDUC 798 during the final semester in the program. Prerequisite: EDUC 717, ECED 618/ ELED 611, and EDUC 787.

ECED 608/ELED 685 Social Studies Methods and Integrated Curriculum (3)

Trends, content, issues and materials involved in the teaching of social studies. An integrated approach to social studies learning based on an understanding of the learner's growth and development and on appropriate curriculum practices. Exploring ways of social studies learning through the arts and technology.  The course will stress developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive practices and ways of meeting the needs of all children in diverse and inclusive classroom settings.

MATH 621 Seminar in Teaching Mathematics (3)

Analysis of techniques and materials in elementary and middle school mathematics instruction and assessment.  Prerequisites:  MATH 204 and MATH 251 or equivalents.

 

Secondary Education (SCED)

ISTC 501 Integrating Instructional Technology (3)
Materials, devices, techniques and settings are presented in an overview of the field of instructional technology.  Laboratory experiences are provided in the operation of instructional hardware. Please note that a lab fee is attached to this course.

SCED 560 Using Reading and Writing in the Secondary School (4)

Developmental reading and writing, assessment, vocabulary building, comprehension, special needs adaptations and clinical practice.

Secondary Education Methods (3)

Content area specialization methods (differs by subject area concentration).  Prerequisite: Completion of 9 credits of M.A.T. course work, or permission of Program Coordinator.

SCED 561 Teaching Reading in the Secondary Content Areas (3)

Application and assessment of reading strategies and instructional frameworks in the secondary content classroom.  Prerequisite:  SCED 560.  Completed concurrent with EDUC 798 in the final semester.

EDUC 735 Proseminar: Problems and Issues (3)

Problems and issues that impact teachers and the education process. Prerequisite: Consent of Program Coordinator.  Completed concurrent with EDUC 798 in the final semester.

 

Special Education (SPED)

SPED 637 Inclusion for the Classroom Teacher (3)

Background and legal bases, programs, methods, and materials for special-needs children, and emphasis on the regular classroom.

SPED 525 Formal Tests and Measurements for Students with Disabilities K-12 (3)

Assessment techniques, philosophical rationale, current research, and intervention strategies for mildly and moderately handicapped children.

SPED 641 Curriculum/Methods of Instruction for Students with Disabilities K-12 (3) Characteristics that affect learning, and the design of educational programs.  (Observation in appropriate setting and guest lectures in specialty area.)

SPED 601 Curriculum Methods of Instruction for Secondary Transition (3)

Practical application of legal requirements for preparing students with disabilities for transition into employment, post-secondary and adult settings, including prevocational and vocational methodologies, student centered planning, and interagency linkages.

SPED 603 Informal Tests and Measurements for Students with Disabilities K-12 (3)

Assessment, diagnosis, prescriptive techniques; procedures, administration, interpretation and programming.  

SPED 605 Working with Families of Students with Disabilities (3)

Communication skills, human relations, parent counseling and conferencing.

SPED 607 Curriculum/Methods of Classroom Management for Students with Disabilities K-12 (3) Theoretical foundations and development of practical intervention.

SPED 646 Using Technology to Differentiate instruction (3)

Practical application of best practices differentiating instruction, using computer software to increase the access and learning of students with disabilities in general education curriculum..
