MAT Admission and Application

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  • General Education Track Secondary certification requires a minimum of 36 credits in a content major.  Special Education Track Secondary certification requires a minimum of 21 credits in a content major.  Secondary content majors include: english, social science, math, biology, chemistry, physics, earth-space science, or one of the modern foreign languages (French, German, or Spanish). Contact the M.A.T. program office for evaluation of transcripts to determine any needed content area course work; this may be done prior to application to the program.  Content major requirements are aligned with professional association content standards.
 
  • Early Childhood or Elementary certification for both General Education Track and Special Education Track requires a well-rounded liberal arts background, including specific courses in English, math, science, the social sciences, and fine arts. In addition, Special Education Track Early Childhood and Special Education Track Elementary certification students must take two graduate level reading courses as prerequisites to the program. They are: 1) ECED 618/ELED 611 Processes and Acquisition of Literacy and 2) EDUC 717 Children's Literature & Other Materials for Teaching Reading.  Contact the M.A.T. program office for evaluation of transcripts to determine any needed content area course work; this may be done prior to application to the program.
  • A 3.00 GPA is required for full admission. A GPA between 2.75 and 2.99 may qualify the applicant for conditional admission. All GPA calculations for admission are based upon the last 60 credits of undergraduate and post-baccalaureate study.
  • An interview with the Program Director may be required.

Send the following admission materials to the Graduate School Office, Towson University, 8000 York Road, Towson, MD  21252:

  • Hard copy of your score report documenting passing scores (as determined by MSDE) on the PRAXIS I Exam (reading, writing, and mathematics) OR a hard copy of your score report for one of the acceptable alternative tests documenting the required minimum score must be submitted for acceptance to the program.  Please visit the MAT Web site (http://wwwnew.towson.edu/coe/mat or call the MAT Office at 410-704-5388 for further details on testing options.  Send hard copy of score report directly to the Graduate School office along with other application materials.   • A brief (1-2 page) admission essay in which the applicant discusses reasons for entering the teaching profession.
  • Two narrative letters of reference.
  • A vita or resume.

Application and all admission credentials may be submitted year round.  However, please note that applications for the One-Year Option must be complete by March 15th; late applications considered if space is available..

Please note:  The Teacher Education Executive Board (TEEB) reserves the right for each department/program to refuse, deny, or revoke the application for admission to professional education programs or continuation in professional education programs of any student whose observed conduct is deemed incongruent with established guidelines of professional behavior.

As a professional discipline, education is "vested by the public with a trust and responsibility requiring the highest ideals of professional service."  All teacher education students agree to accept "the responsibility to adhere to the highest ethical standards of professional behavior."  Placing the importance of professional behavior and duties above one's own convenience is the cornerstone of professionalism.

All teacher education students are responsible for understanding department- and program-specific professional expectations.  In addition to fulfilling all academic requirements, successful completion of all field experiences requires demonstrated professional behavior including, but not limited to, punctuality, attendance, professional attire, discretion, respect for confidentiality, effective and appropriate communication with University and school-based students and personnel, and acceptance of diversity.

All teacher education students must exhibit behavior that is consistent with the University's Code of Conduct and established professional practice in educational and clinical settings.  Successful completion of all field experiences is a requirement for continuation in the education program.

Please note:  In order to successfully complete the MAT Program and graduate, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in the graduate program, earn no more than two grades of  "C" in MAT course work, complete all content prerequisites with grades of  "B" or greater prior to entering EDUC 798, receive a grade of  "C" or greater in EDUC 797 prior to entering EDUC 798, and earn a grade of  "S" in EDUC 798;  additionally, all students must present a Summative Portfolio with scores of  "3" or greater for all 10 INTASC Principles as a program exit/graduation requirement.

HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION

Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your interest in our Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program!  Please read the enclosed information sheets and follow the procedure below to complete your application.  If you have questions, please call the MAT Office at 410-704-5388.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

I. Information sent directly to the MAT Office:

Please send a brief cover letter stating your intended area of concentration and your name, address, and telephone number, along with an unofficial copy (duplicated copies are fine, if legible) of your transcripts from all two- and four-year colleges you have attended to:

Your transcript(s) will be reviewed to determine the content area course work, if any, you will be required to complete in addition to MAT program course work.   Please do this early, even before you apply to the program. Content area courses may be taken concurrent with MAT program course work.  However,  please note that no more than two content courses may be taken concurrent with the One-Year Option.

II. Information received from/sent to the College of Graduate Education and Research:

Please call the Graduate School at 410-704-2501 to receive an application for graduate study.   You may also complete the application online at http://grad.towson.edu.

On your application, please note your area of concentration as Early Childhood, Elementary, or Secondary Education (Secondary must also include subject area:  English, social science, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, earth-space science, French, German or Spanish).  You may also choose a Special Education Track with a choice of concentration in Early Childhood, Elementary or one of the Secondary subject areas listed above.

Please send the application form, application fee ($45 online or $50 paper), one official sealed transcript from your degree granting university, and all application materials listed below to

1)  admission essay (a brief 1-2 page typewritten, double-spaced essay describing your decision to enter the teaching profession and the qualities and skills you bring to teaching)

2)  resume

3)  two narrative letters of recommendation - they provide more useful information than the check sheet included in the graduate application, although the check sheet may be included in addition to the narrative letters (only professional letters are accepted:  from professors, employers, supervisors from volunteer work, or anyone with whom you have worked in a childcare capacity)

4) hard copy of your score report showing passing scores on the PRAXIS I Exam (reading, writing, & math) OR hard copy of your score report for one of the acceptable alternative tests documenting the required minimum score.  Click here for more Testing Information on PRAXIS I and Alternative Testing Options.

When completed applications have been processed by the Graduate School, they will be forwarded to the MAT Office.  Once all application materials are received in the MAT Office, the Program Coordinator will review your application for admission.  A letter will be sent to you regarding admission status, required program information meetings, or a possible admission interview.         

APPLICATION DEADLINES

For timely admission, all application materials should be submitted to the MAT Office by the following dates:

October 1 - to begin the program in the Spring semester


March 15 - to begin the program in the Summer semester (includes One-Year Option)

June 15 - to begin the program in the Fall semester

All application materials should be received by the above dates to be considered for admission to the MAT program during the corresponding semester.  However, late applications will be considered if space is available.

WHAT IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE REQUIRED UNDERGRADUATE COURSES?

Certification in the field of Early Childhood or Elementary Education requires a broad liberal arts background, with specific courses in math, science, social science, and English. Secondary certification requires a degree or a minimum of 36 hours in a content major taught at the Secondary level.

Upon review of your transcript, the Program Director will send you a letter noting which courses, if any, you will need to take in the content area of your choice. To find if you will need to take content area courses, you should send an unofficial transcript to the Program Director before you apply to the Graduate School.
