College of Education

"The college that prepares teachers as facilitators of active learning for diverse and inclusive communities of learners in environments that are technologically advanced"

NCATE logoRecognized as Maryland’s preeminent teacher education institution as well as a  national model for professional preparation, the College of Education at Towson University has a distinguished history in the preparation of classroom teachers and education specialists. The College offers a comprehensive slate of high quality, performance-based, professional education programs for the initial and advanced preparation of teachers and education specialists.

Towson faculty, a diverse community of learners/teachers/scholars with a wide range of strengths and specialties, model excellent teaching and learning skills. Highly experienced faculty are committed to a common goal: to prepare and support the continuing development of professional educators at all levels to meet and respond creatively to the critical educational challenges of the twenty first century.

Programs require candidates to master and demonstrate professional knowledge, skills and dispositions that place the learner at the center of an active learning process, and embrace a constructivist conception of learner-centered teaching and learning aimed at higher order skills and understanding.

Through innovative partnerships with public schools, certification programs provide students with progressively responsible field and/or clinical experiences in a variety of public school settings. These rich experiences enable students to merge theory with the wisdom of practice, to develop and refine their knowledge and skills of teaching and student learning, and to be well-prepared for entry into their professional roles.

The majority of graduates from the College of Education enter America's schools as teachers and specialists. Careers for educators are also available in a variety of non-school settings: government, industry, media production, military, correctional institutions, and other emerging fields.
