County Public Schools
Somerset County GEAR UP served Greenwood and Carter G. Woodson middle schools and now serves Crisfield and Washington high schools. The GEAR UP program has become an integral part of the high school curriculum and works closely with the School Improvement Team of each school. These teams suggested GEAR UP staff work on obtaining a better assessment of students’ career interests. In response, GEAR UP is assisting with the purchase of the ACT’s ”PLAN” survey, a career guidance resource developed for tenth-graders. Somerset County has also established closely coordinated partnerships with Salisbury University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), and Wor-Wic Community College (WWCC). Salisbury University was awarded a CPIP grant to continue its Excelling in Math and Science program. As most of this year’s Somerset cohort will be taking geometry, English, and biology, SU has developed a project-based tutoring/mentoring service in these subject areas, with classroom teachers as consultants, who help identify students who could benefit from the these services. The consultants also help identify short projects that engage the students and are aligned with the curricula. Each project team includes five high school students led by an SU student. Salisbury and UMES coordinate activities, with Salisbury doing most of the mathematics and science instruction and UMES directing most of the related career awareness activities. An academic summer camp is offered at WWCC and includes activities for parents; other family events are coordinated by Wor-Wic throughout the year. Planning for the Saturday program is done in conjunction with school science teachers and supports instruction. Salisbury, UMES, and WWCC, like higher education partners at the other GEAR UP sites, participate in other college awareness and preparation activities as well.

CPIP Partners Project Title: Reap the Benefits III: Effectively Exploring Careers! Project Directors: Michael Nugent Department of Education University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lida Brown Building Princess Anne, MD 21853 Project Abstract: UMES is entering its third year as a partner to Somerset County Public School GEAR UP students at Washington and Crisfield high schools. The faculty and staff of the university’s School of Education continue to work collaboratively with Somerset County, Salisbury University, and Wor-Wic Community College. Identifying the sciences as a content area where Somerset County students need academic enrichment, the UMES project begins with ten aviation workshops in the fall. The sessions are held once a week for ten weeks and introduce students to the study of flight and aerodynamics. Students experience the UMES’ flight simulator, take an actual plane ride, and use model-plane building to study aircraft design. These activities help students learn and apply the theoretical concepts of physics, algebra, and trigonometry. The project will continues to work with the Salisbury and WorWic to offer the fourth Academic Skills Kamp (ASK) during the summer of 2005.
Project Title: Excelling in Math and Science IV Project Director(s): Robert Tardiff and Michael Bardzell Henson School of Science and Technology Salisbury University 1101 Camden Ave. Salisbury, MD 21801 Project Abstract: Salisbury University (SU) has been a college partner with Somerset County Public Schools (SCPS) GEAR UP program since July 2000. Beginning in July 2002, SU, Wor-Wic Community College (WWCC), and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) worked together to provide college support for SCPS. SU’s activities for FY 2004 include: 1) deliver an on-demand tutoring/mentoring program; 2) provide in-school academic activities (assemblies led by SU faculty with high school students given preparation beforehand); 3) offer professional development for teachers designed in consort with the teachers and intended to be job-embedded over the course of a term; and 4) prepare students and their parents/guardians for successfully competing in the college admission process. Preparing parents for the college admission process is a multi-step process and includes: 1) providing PSAT and SAT preparation; 2) training students in college application essay writing; and 3) developing consumer skills for visiting campuses prior to college selection. Additional funds are included to collaborate with UMES and WorWic on the fourth Academic Summer Kamp (ASK) program—a week-long academic summer camp held at both SU and UMES and staffed by SU, UMES, and WorWic faculty.
