IRAQ FOR SALE: THE WAR PROFITEERS

BALTIMORE, Maryland – There will be a free public screening of the documentary Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers, hosted by the College Libertarians of Towson (CLT) and the Towson University College Democrats (TUCD).

This screening will take place on Tuesday, October 23rd, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, in room 238 of the Lecture Hall.  Free food and drink will be provided.  All Towson University students and faculty are invited to attend.  We will also have a guest speaker, veteran Geoffrey Millard.

Iraq for Sale is a documentary made in 2006 by Robert Greenwald.  The documentary explores the anti-free market economic policies being employed by the U.S. government in the pursuit of its war in Iraq.  Specifically, it looks at various neo-mercantilist businesses (e.g. Halliburton), as well as the government’s policy of doling out no-bid contracts and so-called cost-plus provisions that, according to the Wall Street Journal, “guarantee contractors a certain profit regardless of how much they ultimately spend.”

“Such agreements,” says CLT Vice President Alex Peak, “remove any incentives for private companies to control expenses, which are paid for by the tax-payer.”

According to Anthony Gregory, “The neo-mercantilism so prevalent in the history of U.S. foreign policy—from United Fruit in Latin America to Halliburton in Iraq—benefits big business by socializing costs and risks, thus forcing taxpayers and foreigners to pay for corporate profits.”

Libertarians support free markets as competition between companies drives prices of goods and services down while driving their quality up.  Free markets also drive up wages, as businesses seek the best employees.  The government, by contrast, is inefficient, expensive, and rarely delivering what it promises.

The College Libertarians meet every Tuesday between 6:30 and 8:00 PM in room 238 of Lecture Hall.  Those wishing for more information about the club are encouraged to email CollegeLibertarians@yahoo.com.
